Two Kinds of Prayer

In John 11:41-43, Jesus was by the tomb of Lazarus. Lazarus had been dead four days. Jesus prayed two kinds of prayers.

The first prayer — directed to the Father — was reverent, calm, showing divine relationship, demonstrating strong faith in God who answers prayer. The tone was one of worship and conversation.

All of a sudden it switched and became violent. The second was not a request — it was a decree, an authoritative command, a statement of dominion. Lazarus, come forth.

When he was talking to his Father — reverent prayer. When he needed to face the spirit of death and hell — violent prayer. That is not a begging matter; it is a violent matter.

The Anointing Destroys Yokes

In Isaiah 10:27, the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing. Not managed, not weakened, not rebranded — destroyed. Destroyed means:

• Reduced to useless fragments
• Injured beyond repair
• Demolished, ruined, put to an end
• Total consumption and eradication

In 1 John 3:8, for this purpose the Son of God was manifested — that he might destroy the works of the devil. Jesus is a destroyer of the works of the devil. The anointing is a destroyer.

There is extreme wickedness in the spirit realm now. If you have a strange enemy, pray strange prayers. You have wicked enemies — pray wicked prayers. Have mysterious enemies — pray mysterious prayers. Have violent enemies — pray violent prayers.

The Kingdom of Heaven Suffereth Violence

In Matthew 11:12, the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.

Are you tired of tolerating the same pattern? Are you tired of carrying the same burden? Are you tired of accepting what is breaking you? Are you tired of repeating the same non-positive cycles? Are you sick of being sick and tired of being tired?

What you do not confront continues. What you permit you empower. What you tolerate will grow. Life is not fair — it is you who must decide that life has to be fair to you.

Violent Prayer Defined

Violent prayer is prayer that aggressively challenges the agenda, devices, and works of the enemy. It does violence to the works of the enemy. It is a clash of kingdoms. It is insisting that what must be must be.

Violent prayers differ from normal prayers:

• Normal prayers are reverent communication with God — gentle requests, relationship-oriented, spiritual dialogue
• Violent prayers enforce authority, command results, deploy spiritual weapons, use decrees and declarations, invoke divine judgment, push back darkness aggressively

Violent prayer is used when there is crisis, when there is strong resistance, when you are fed up with the situation. It is bold, and the enemy may even consider it rude. It is like banging the door at midnight — the owner of the house is asleep but the man at the door keeps banging and disturbing until he gets what he needs.

Paul and Silas praised God — there is room for gentle prayer. But they also prayed when the earthquake began — there is room for violent prayer.

Jesus commended blind Bartimaeus for shouting loudly. Holy stubbornness is allowed in scripture. David told Goliath: today I will cut off your head and feed it to the birds. That is violent prayer. It is not about prayer being civilized — it is about confronting what is confronting you.

There is a room for gentle prayers. There is a room for praises and worship. And there is a room for violent prayers — Paul said in Ephesians 6:10, be strong in the Lord and in the power of his might. The reason he asks us to be strong is because our enemy is strong.
