Three Things Required

Three things are needed for this message to produce results: holy anger, violent prayers, and the spirit of enough.

Breaking the power of yesterday is a serious deliverance topic — impossible to exhaust in any single session. But the most important thing is not covering the topic. The most important thing is having the victory.

The church is not an entertainment centre. It is a warfront. Not a place to come and play. The things heard in church need to be taken home and thoroughly dealt with. Notes need to be taken. The things that are planted in a service need time to be worked through.

The Yesterday That Reuben Could Not Escape

Genesis 49:1-4

And Jacob called unto his sons and said, gather yourselves together that I may tell you what shall befall you in the last days. He began with his firstborn:

Reuben, thou art my firstborn — my might, the beginning of my strength, the excellency of dignity, and the excellency of power.

Five qualifications were on the head of Reuben:

1. Firstborn
2. Might
3. Beginning of strength

With five such qualifications stacked on a man's head — these are extraordinary. And then comes the verdict:

Unstable as water, thou shalt not excel.

Not because of a lack of qualification. Not because of a lack of positioning. But because of something in the past — something done long ago that was now reaching forward to remove the excellence from his hands.

Verse 4: Unstable as water, thou shalt not excel — because thou wentest up to thy father's bed; then defiledst thou it.

He had slept with his father's wife. That was done long ago. Now they were old men. But the power of that yesterday had come upon him to remove all the excellence that was rightfully his.

The Long Arm of Yesterday

The power of yesterday can remove everything that is rightfully yours. Five heavy qualifications — firstborn, might, strength, dignity, power — all overridden by one act committed in a single moment decades before.

This is the structure of a delayed curse. This is how the enemy works through the power of yesterday: he reaches back to a moment that was never repented of, never broken, never confronted — and uses it to seal a person's ceiling.

The power of yesterday can operate through:

• Personal sins long past
• Ancestral patterns handed down through bloodlines
• Covenants made by fathers and mothers that were never broken
• Oaths and vows that still have legal standing in the spirit realm

Until the power of yesterday is confronted and broken, a person can have every natural qualification for greatness and still not excel.
