What Is Excellent Counsel?

Excellent counsel is heaven's voice that saves you from earthly mistakes. It is a counsel from God — when you have it, you do not lower your standards, you do not marry regret, and you excel in everything: your job, your career, your business.

Excellent counsel is seeking God first. Matthew 6:33 — Seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you. Before you apply for that job, seek him first. Before you decide to move into a house, seek him first. Before you say yes to a brother or a sister, seek him first. Your location will determine your destination.

How to Seek Excellent Counsel

1. Through the word of God. Psalm 119:105 — Your word is a lamp to guide me and a light for my path. The word of God is the foundation for excellent counsel. When you are rooted in God's word, you have proper expectations and proper standards.
2. Through the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit will let you see things your physical eyes cannot see. It will give you the spirit of discernment — to see the red flags in a job, in a person, in a relationship. What you marry is what you carry.
3. By having a spiritual mentor and leader — someone accountable to God. Proverbs 11:14 — Without good direction, people lose their way.

What Excellent Counsel Does

• It cancels commotion. When confusion comes, divert your attention to the counsel of God. Immediately, clarity comes.
• It cancels contention. There is a difference between competition and contention. Competition says if you win, fine. Contention says even if you win it, I will not rest. When you receive the excellent counsel of God, all contention around you is cancelled.
• It cancels all other counsel. The counsel of the Lord shall stand. David was faced with Ahithophel — one man who had all his secrets. The only thing David could do was cry out to God. The Bible says Ahithophel's counsel became foolishness. He went and killed himself. The excellent counsel of God cancels all evil counsellors.
• It gives peace. Colossians 3:15 — Let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your heart.
• It gives clarity, not confusion. 1 Corinthians 14:33 — God is not the author of confusion but of peace.
• It gives conviction, not excitement. Excitement will distract you and derail you. Conviction keeps you focused and grounded.

God's Good Thoughts Toward You

Jeremiah 29:11 — For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.

Counsel to the Youth

Exodus 20:12 — Honor your father and your mother, so that your days may be long. Many people, because they are more educated than their parents, do not honor them. That is a dangerous thing. The possibility of you becoming a parent is very narrow if you do not honor your own.

Remember your creator in the days of your youth. Ecclesiastes 12:1–8. Samuel started hearing from God at a very tender age. He became the first king-maker and king-remover of Israel — because he started by committing himself to God early.

Be diligent. Proverbs 22:29 — Seest thou a man diligent in his business? He will stand before kings and not before obscure men. It does not matter how low you are right now. If you will be diligent, one day you'll be dining with heads of state.

Counsel to the Elders

Psalm 90:12 — Teach us to number our days. Human beings count by years; God counts by days. As you get older, you get weaker. Apply wisdom. Ecclesiastes 7:19 — Wisdom strengthens the wise more than ten rulers in a city.

Counsel for the Marriageable

God is good. Psalm 100:5. In Genesis 2:18, he said, "It is not good that man should be alone. I will make a helper fit for him." That is God's own word. He does not like anything that is not good.

Keep yourself pure. Do not allow delay to push you into compromise. Before you decide on who to marry, pray. Proverbs 19:21 — There are many devices in the heart of man, but it is the counsel of the Lord that shall stand.

Counsel for the men:

• Do not choose simply because of beauty. Proverbs 31:30 — Beauty is vain. It is only the woman who fears the Lord that is to be praised.
• Do not marry a woman who cannot cook and be hospitable. Read 1 Samuel 25:2–42, Genesis 18:1–14, 2 Kings 4:8–17. Sarah cooked for God. The Shunamite woman received what money cannot buy because of her hospitality.
• Do not marry a woman who does not do things in moderation. Philippians 4:5.
• As much as possible, marry within the same family of God — where both families share the same spiritual covering, so that in times of challenge, there is someone who can speak to both sides.

Counsel for the women:

• If a man wants to marry you but has no job, ask. Genesis 2:15 — God gave Adam a job before he gave him a wife. 1 Timothy 5:8 — Any man who cannot provide for his own home is worse than an infidel.
• Do not marry a man whose tongue is too sweet. Proverbs 29:5 — He that flattereth his neighbour spreadeth a net for his feet.
• Anyone who says "Thus saith the Lord, you are going to be my wife" — ask him if he believes in holiness. If he does not believe in holiness, run.

Counsel for the Married

Your spouse is given to you to be a prayer partner. Matthew 18:19 — If two agree as touching anything on earth, it shall be done. Bear your heart to each other. Let there be no anger unresolved before you go to bed. Ephesians 4:26 — Do not let the sun go down on your wrath.

Jesus is coming soon. 1 Corinthians 15:51–58. Luke 17:34 — When the Lord comes, two may be on the same bed and one is taken and one is left. That is one of the reasons never to go to bed with unresolved issues between you and your spouse. Be prepared — he may come tonight.
