Most people assume the Bible has nothing to say about science, and many skeptics dismiss it outright as a pre-scientific book. What is less known is that scripture describes several scientific realities centuries, sometimes millennia, before science independently confirmed them. A close look at a handful of these examples is worth walking through.
The Earth Hangs on Nothing
Job 26:7
He hangs the earth upon nothing.
Written around 1500 BC, at a time when it was widely believed the earth rested on the back of an animal or a giant, this verse describes the earth suspended in space with nothing holding it up. Science did not confirm the earth's free float in space until the 1600s, roughly three thousand years later.
An Invisible Structure
Hebrews 11:3
The things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.
Written roughly two thousand years ago, this describes the visible world being made of invisible building blocks, matter composed of atoms too small to see, long before atomic theory existed.
The Earth Is Round
Isaiah 40:22
It is He that sits upon the circle of the earth.
The Hebrew word translated "circle" here, chug, carries the sense of something spherical or arched, not flat. Isaiah was written between roughly 740 and 680 BC, at least three centuries before Aristotle first proposed in writing that the earth might be a sphere.
Paths in the Sea
Psalm 8:8
The paths of the seas.
Written some 2,800 years ago, this describes defined paths running through the ocean. Matthew Maury, later called the father of oceanography, took this verse seriously enough to go looking for those paths, and his findings on warm and cold ocean currents remain foundational to the field.
Light That Speaks
Job 38:35
Can you send lightnings, that they may go and say to you, "Here we are?"
Written around 1500 BC, this describes light being sent out and returning as a kind of message, a description that sounds far closer to radio wave transmission than anything achievable at the time. Electromagnetic radiation traveling at the speed of light, the principle behind wireless communication, was not proposed by science until James Clerk Maxwell's work in 1864, roughly 3,300 years later.
A Wearing-Out Universe
Isaiah 51:6, Psalm 102:25-26, Hebrews 1:11
Three separate passages describe the earth and the heavens wearing out like a garment. This mirrors the second law of thermodynamics, the principle that ordered systems tend toward disorder over time, a law science did not formalize until relatively recently.
The Water Cycle
Ecclesiastes 1:7, Ecclesiastes 11:3, Amos 9:6
All the rivers run into the sea, yet the sea is not full; unto the place from where the rivers came, there they return again. Clouds full of rain empty themselves upon the earth, and the waters of the sea are called up and poured out again over the land. Together these verses describe a complete hydrologic cycle, evaporation, rainfall, and river return to the sea, more than two thousand years before the mechanics of the water cycle were properly understood by figures like Pierre Perrault and Edmond Halley in the 1600s.
None of this is an accident of poetic language. Across roughly 1,600 years of writing, by more than forty different authors on three continents, in three different languages, scripture consistently anticipates discoveries that took science thousands of years longer to reach on its own.
