Pray Through to Break Through

The text for this message is 1 Chronicles 4:9–10:

And Jabez was more honorable than his brethren: and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, Because I bare him with sorrow. And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me. And God granted him that which he requested.

The message is simple: pray through to break through. Pray aggressively until there is a shift in the realms of the spirit. Don't stop praying until things open up.

Three Laws for Understanding Scripture

Before entering the text, three interpretive laws are essential.

The first is the law of covenant — every scripture is interpreted with the understanding that a price has been paid. The second is the law of double reference — when God spoke to Abraham, he was also speaking to you. When he addressed Ezekiel, that address reaches you too. The third is the law of context — never take a verse in isolation. Look at what precedes and what follows.

When the Record Stops

From verse one of chapter four, the writer was listing names in succession — he gave birth to this one, that one gave birth to that one. But when the record reached Jabez, it stopped. The writer didn't just name him and move on. He explained. He analyzed. He settled on Jabez.

That pause in the text is a prophetic marker. It is not where you come from that determines your definition. It is what you do. Two people can come from the same family, the same bloodline, the same history — but one stands out. Life is what you do with where you were placed.

Four Kinds of Background

There are at least four kinds of background.

• The underprivileged background — where nobody succeeded, where poverty was generational, where education was inaccessible.
• The embattled background — where the battle began from the womb. Like Jacob and Esau, some are born into contest and struggle. The story of the woman in 1 Kings 3 whose child was nearly divided by Solomon illustrates how some children enter life already at the center of conflict.
• The idolatrous background — where witchcraft, idol worship, and demonic rituals form the spiritual inheritance. Gideon came from this background — his own father had a temple of Baal. Yet one day Gideon tore it down and nothing could hold him.
• The privileged background that turned — even wealth does not guarantee security. Elimelech, Naomi's husband, had a wealthy brother named Boaz — yet he died in a foreign land in poverty. There are people who know those who could change their story, yet no one does.

What Is Breakthrough?

Breakthrough is tearing down limitations, restrictions, and confinements. More precisely, breakthrough is returning to God's intentional order.

God called Jabez honorable. His mother called him sorrow. Before his mother named him, God had already given him a name. Breakthrough is answering the name that God gave you, not the name that life called you. God called you successful. God called you favored. God called you blessed. Breakthrough is living inside that name.

Breakthrough is also about relegating the regulations that have blocked you — entering your rest regardless of the obstacles in the way. It is not negotiation. It is penetration.

What You Were Raised to Be vs. What You Were Born to Be

Moses was raised to be the son of Pharaoh's daughter — a future king of Egypt, educated in all the wisdom of Egypt, with access to the palace and the highest corridors of power. But he was born to be the deliverer of Israel. Egypt was too small for his assignment.

The day Moses saw an Egyptian beating an Israelite and looked from one to the other was the day the test came. The Egyptian was showing him what he was raised to be. The Israelite was showing him what he was born to be. He made his choice — and destroyed what he was raised to be in order to become what he was born to be.

There is what you were raised to be and what you were born to be. Your family history may have raised you to fail, to settle, to stay. But that is not what you were born to be. You were born for honor. You were born for a name that history pauses to explain.
