An Anniversary Charge

It takes vision to start. It takes discipline to continue. But it takes mercy to finish. When everything is said and done, if you do finish, it is because God showed you mercy.

Four Seasons in Every Destiny

No matter how great a ministry is, there will always be at least four seasons.

1. Visibility and Acceptance

   This is the season when God is introducing a minister to their generation. People have a right to doubt, a right to not take the minister seriously. This is when the foundation that makes calling and election show is laid. It is an average of 10 to 15 years from the commencement of ministry. People will study, listen, nod their heads, and say they are still watching. But within 10 years, there is more than enough time to convince a generation that the hand of God is upon a life.

   The deception with this first season is that it requires no platform — only a voice. A minister can be itinerant for 10 to 15 years and people will not ask for a platform; they only need the grace of God on the life. But remaining at that level will bring regret at the levels coming in the future. The first level is deceptive precisely because people honor without any transgenerational thinking. The minister is simply trying to be received and accepted.

2. Structural Establishment

   At this point, the minister is no longer trying to prove a point. Those who know God has called already know. Now the work shifts to building structures and systems — leadership, administration, governance.

   Most ministers starting out are focused entirely on grace and the quality of spiritual content. But sooner or later it becomes clear that it is possible to steal in a house where God is moving, and that is no longer an anointing issue — that is a structure and systems issue. It is possible for controversy to arise among families even where God is moving, and that is no longer just an anointing issue — that needs leadership and structure.

   The early church experienced this. When the Holy Ghost moved in Acts 2, it was not about structure — it was about a harvest. But by Acts 6, welfare problems had emerged, women were raising complaints about how resources were being distributed, and the disciples recognized the need to put structures in place. Structure is what guarantees the continuity of vision.

3. Legacy and Consolidation

   At this level, the focus shifts from personal success to the generation to come. The ministry begins building institutions, programs, and systems that preserve its convictions. By the time a minister arrives at this third level, almost everything to be done in terms of proving success has been done. The minister no longer lives for himself alone.

   Generally, by age 30, a person has exhausted the time of thinking only about themselves. Anyone still thinking exclusively about themselves by that age is not wise. This is when books are written, schools are established, mentorship programs are designed. These programs will immortalize impact even when the minister is no longer present.

4. Succession and Rest

   Rest does not mean death. It simply means the assignment is complete. Not many people reach this level — age may take them there but they lack the vision to step into it intentionally.

   Reinhard Bonnke is one who did this exceptionally well. Everyone recognized he had finished his assignment. He was alive, but there was nothing else to do — he had done it well. The proof of success is not personal exploits. It is what continues after the work is done.

The Danger of Overdwelling on the Past

Philippians 3:12-15 — Paul, at the zenith of his apostolic ministry, said: *Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect. But this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark of the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.*

He did not say he was forgetting evil things or bad things alone. He said forgetting the things that are behind — including the good things. Sometimes the reason a person stops succeeding is because of their last success.

Success can do as much harm as failure depending on how it is managed:

• Past victories can create complacency. They can create carelessness. They can tilt a person toward the corridors of compromise. Something done right yesterday may be the reason for failure today. The higher you rise, the greater your chances of falling.
• Past failures can bring discouragement. A person can fail so repeatedly that when God says to try again, they already know what to expect and refuse to move.

The character of champions is to not over-celebrate success. When something great happens, acknowledge it sufficiently to be motivated — and then move on. The story is over. What is next?

Overdwelling on past victories or failures — either way — can stop advancement. It can bring pride, overconfidence, and indiscipline from the positive side. It can bring fear, discouragement, and deflated passion from the negative side.

Stay Connected to the Vine

John 15:4-5 — *Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches. He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.*

There are two ways Satan destroys great men. One is to use evil. The other is to use vision.

Satan can use vision to destroy a man. When he finds he cannot distract through sin and the flesh, he will occupy a person with vision — taking them away from God's presence. Administration can distract to a minister's doom. Leadership can do the same. The trouble in Acts 6 was not merely an economic welfare problem. It was a distraction problem. The church was about to step into a new phase, and Satan engineered a crisis to draw the apostles away from prayer and the word. They detected it. They said they could not leave their primary assignment to attend to the matter of tables.

Vision is not equal to Jesus. Being visionary and being godly are two related but different things. A minister can be busy doing ministry without realizing where they left his presence a long time ago.

It is better to fail in vision and remain rich in the relationship with God than to succeed in vision at the cost of that relationship. Stay connected to the vine. Let nothing — not victories, not success — take a person away from his presence.

Keep the Vision Alive

This is not in contradiction to staying connected — it is its complement. Vision must be valued beneath his presence, but it must not be abandoned.

Joshua 13:1 — *Now Joshua was old and stricken in years; and the Lord said unto him, Thou art old and stricken in years, and there remaineth yet very much land to be possessed.*

In as much as you have done well, there is still much land to be possessed.

Keep pressing. There is still more land to be conquered. For as long as vision remains alive, the mission will also remain alive. The way to kill the mission is to kill the vision.

Proverbs 4:18 — *The path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.*

Vision gives the legitimacy to say no to many things. The key to focus is vision. Without it, there is no power or basis to decline distractions. However, vision has a side effect — it creates blindness. When the eyes are fixed forward, what is behind and beside cannot be seen. This is why vision must be backed by strong relationships with people who can see what the visionary cannot.

Live by the Principles of the Word of God

Matthew 4:4 — *Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.*

If a life is not built on the rock of God's word, there will not be longevity of impact. Gifts can fade. A minister can prophesy and operate powerfully and yet, if the life is not built on the word of God, something will break down. John the Baptist was the greatest prophet of his time — he was the one who ordained Jesus to ministry — and yet there was a rock of offense in his path because his life was not sufficiently grounded in the word. Build on the word of God, not on sentiments, not on popular opinions. The grass withers and the flower fades, but the word of the Lord abides forever.

Leviticus 9:6 — The Lord commanded Moses: this is what the Lord commanded that he should do, and the glory of the Lord shall appear. There is what must be done, there is how life must be lived — and the glory of God will perpetually manifest.

Build Inner Strength Through Consistent Prayer

Luke 18:1 — *He spake a parable to the end that men ought always to pray and not to faint.*

1 Thessalonians 5:17 — *Pray without ceasing.*

To last, strength is required — not just intelligence. There are three seasons in a person's life: a season of discovery and preparation, a season of training, and a season of deployment. The season of training is the hardest. It is the season of living in the silence of God — where even as a preacher, God seems to speak only when counseling others, then returns to silence. In that season, intelligence and creativity are not what is needed. What is needed is strength — the capacity to believe even where there is no understanding.

Build inner strength through the practice of consistent prayer. When a person prays, they build strength. They are strengthened in the inner man by the Spirit, and capacity is the result.

Walk in Humility

James 4:6 — *God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace to the humble.*

This statement is sobering. When God is the one resisting a person, the anointing cannot help — the anointing was not designed to fight God. When God is fighting a life, only the prayer of repentance and mercy can help.

• Humility is not refusing to acknowledge the goodness of God. That is not humility — that is false modesty.
• Humility is not rejecting good things. There is a difference between being simple and being humble.
• Humility is being vocal about the contribution of God as the basis for who you are and where you are — unapologetically telling people: I am what I am, where I am, doing what I am, by the grace of God.

Pride is an amplifier of hatred. If a person is ignorant and proud, they have brought the battle closer. If they are wicked and proud, they have brought it closer still. Humility saves many battles — including battles that have no rewards. There are many fights that would never need to be fought if a person walked in humility.

Build Systems and Structures to Preserve Legacy

Proverbs 13:22 — *A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children's children.*

When God sends a word to Jacob, that word should lighten upon Israel. Nothing God gives a man is for that man alone. The five things that qualify as true inheritance are:

• Spiritual convictions — the first and most transferable inheritance
• Name — the reputation and honor built through a life of integrity
• Relationships — connections to people of grace and godly influence
• Wisdom — the distilled lessons of experience
• Estate — material and financial legacy, the least of the five

In Africa, there are rarely third- or fourth-generation institutions. There is a generation that suffers to build, a generation that participates in the suffering and watches the emergence, and then a generation that does not know Egypt — born on the way to the promised land, unacquainted with the ordinances of the covenant. These are the ones who often bring the legacy down.

Build systems and structures that preserve convictions. Write books. Establish schools. Design programs. These things will immortalize impact even after the builder is gone. Don't just give children money because they are children — build a system that teaches them responsibility.

Invest in Replication — Raise at Least Two Generations

It is in mentoring at least two generations that a person is officially considered successful. The Bible says a good man leaves an inheritance for his children's and his children's children.

Mentorship and replication demand two things: the willingness of the mentor to pour in, and the humility of the mentee to receive. There cannot be a pouring until there is a potential difference. As long as a person believes they are at the same level as their mentor, they will receive nothing.

The laws of impartation are sequential:

1. Honor
2. Service
3. Training

Prophetic declaration is only the final point of transferring graces — it is not a shortcut around these three processes. Elisha was not originally destined to be a prophet. He was a farmer. But he subscribed to the law of replication and became a great prophet. Graces answer to replication, and replication answers to honor.

Be Joyful — Void of Bitterness and Offense

1 Peter 1:8 — *Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory.*

The greatest way of preserving the power of God is not prayer, not fasting, not Bible study alone — it is joy.

What killed John the Baptist was not generational curses. There was no demonic attack that ended his ministry. The one thing that killed John the Baptist was offense. He was the greatest prophet of his generation, the man who ordained Jesus to ministry. He had already declared that Jesus must increase and he must decrease. But when Jesus increased and John was imprisoned, he expected Jesus to intervene — and Jesus kept quiet. In his growing anger, John sent messengers to ask whether Jesus was truly the Messiah or should they expect another. Jesus recognized that this was not a voice of ignorance. It was the voice of offense. He sent the answer back — and then said: *Blessed is he who is not offended in me.*

• Offense can end what years of faithfulness have built.
• Joy is the one thing that keeps power flowing.
• Joy is a choice — not a response to circumstances, but a decision made in advance.

One of the greatest secrets of joy is to be ever conscious of what God has already done — not just what is expected of him. Every stage of your life is someone else's prayer point. Every stage.

Nowhere in the Bible is a person told to rejoice in a situation. The instruction is always to rejoice in the Lord:

Habakkuk 3:17-18 — *Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines... yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation.*

You do not need things to happen to be joyful. You only need things to happen to have the fullness of joy. You can rejoice whether things are happening or not.

Joy is a demonstration of faith. Always interpret life from the lens of God's sovereign plan. Jeremiah 29:11 — *I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and an expected end.*
