Mark 9 — The Dumb Spirit
Mark 9:14-27
A father came to the disciples with a son who had a dumb spirit. The boy could not speak. He suffered from seizures. He was hyperactive — cast into fire, cast into water. When the disciples could not help, the father brought the boy directly to Jesus.
What happened next is significant: the moment the boy came into the presence of Jesus, the situation looked worse. The spirit tore him. He fell to the ground and wallowed, foaming. Many said he was dead.
This is a pattern that many families have experienced. It was when you started praying that things seemed to get worse. It was when you brought the case to God that the attack intensified. This is not failure — this is Satan seeking attention.
Satan wants you to agree with what he is doing so that you can confirm it.
It is like an offer and an acceptance. A lump appears in the body — that is Satan offering you cancer. You have to respond. You cannot stay silent. Jesus never agreed that the boy was dead. He insisted. He reached down and lifted the boy, and the boy was alive.
What We Are Dealing With Today
The same spirit described in Mark 9 — dumb spirit, seizures, hyperactivity, agitation — is what many families are dealing with today under different names: delayed speech, autism spectrum, hyperactivity disorders. These are not just medical conditions. There is a spiritual root that medicine alone cannot reach.
Satan can use anything — vaccines, medications, circumstances — to find access. But what is being dealt with here is a spirit. It must be addressed as such. Therapy is not wrong. But if the spiritual root is not addressed, you cannot get to the bottom of the matter.
Keep Your Confession Constant
The lesson from this passage is not just about deliverance — it is about faith that holds steady when things appear to go backwards.
- When you began to pray over your health and it got worse, Satan is trying to discourage you.
- When the situation looks like it has deteriorated since you brought it to God, that is not evidence that God has failed.
- Keep your confession constant and consistent, no matter how terrible the situation looks.
The boy was not dead. Jesus knew that. And because Jesus would not agree with the enemy's report, the boy rose.
Father, every mother with a child who is called a special child — I pray for complete restoration. I pray that your child's health is restored perfectly. That the child grows strong and healthy in stature, in wisdom, and in favour with God and with man. That one day you will stand and share your testimony. That the tongue of that child is loosed and they speak clearly — calling daddy, calling mummy, beginning to speak.
Lord, wipe away the tears of every father and every mother. Turn secret tears into sincere joy, in Jesus' name. Amen.
