The Protocol of Heaven

Before God gives you anything to do, he must tell you who you are. This is not incidental — it is the protocol of heaven.

When the time came for the Messiah to be born and an angel was sent to announce the assignment to Mary, the very first words spoken were not about the task. In Luke 1:28, before any mention of the pregnancy, before any instruction was given, the angel said: Rejoice, highly favored one. The Lord is with you. Blessed are you.

Nothing had happened yet. The conception had not taken place. Yet the angel spoke in present tense. God is with you. You are blessed. You are highly favored. Heaven was rewiring her identity before she was given her assignment. Because God must first make the man before he makes the man do anything.

Identity Is Divine Capital

Identity is the foundation on which everything else is built. Very successful, very powerful people can be profoundly insecure — always needing external validation, always protecting their territory, always feeling small no matter what they accumulate. That is not a wealth problem. It is an identity problem.

If your identity is broken, every success is like throwing jewels into a bag with a hole. You feel it for a moment, then it's gone, and you are still empty.

God dealt with Abraham's identity before he moved him. He changed his name from Abram to Abraham — father of nations — before a single child existed. He said: I have made you, not I will make you. This is how spiritual destinies are built. Without capital, without funding — just you and God in the place of the spirit, and he is reconfiguring your identity.

Where Does Your Identity Come From?

Research identifies three primary sources. The first is your foundation — where and how you grew up, whether your achievements were celebrated, what early voices told you about yourself. The second is key life events — victories that unlocked confidence in you, failures that diminished it, relationships that shaped how you see yourself. The third is your goals and aspirations — what legacy you intend to leave and whether you believe it is possible.

Events can change your identity if you allow them. In psychology this is called a narrative identity — the internalized story you tell yourself about who you are, where you have been, and where you are heading. It regulates your emotions, your relationships, your anticipation of the future, and your response to challenges.

The Serotonin Principle

Jordan Peterson documented a scientific experiment with lobsters. A lobster that habitually wins fights sees its serotonin levels rise — it becomes more confident, more audacious. A lobster that loses consistently sees its serotonin drop and begins to shrink from confrontations it would previously have taken on. The same dynamic operates in human identity. A breakup, a business failure, an academic rejection — if you allow the event to rewrite your internal story, it will.

This is what happened to Jeremiah. God called him before he was formed in the womb, ordained him as a prophet to the nations — and Jeremiah responded: I cannot speak, for I am a child. That was not his identity from God. That was a social construct absorbed from an environment where children were told to be silent. He had taken on an identity from his surroundings rather than from his Creator.

Embracing the Identity God Declares

A psychologist studying habit formation found that one of the primary reasons people fail to change is identity. The prefrontal cortex protects what it perceives to be your identity. If you say, "I am always late, I am undisciplined," those labels become what the brain defends. But when someone who wants to write more regularly begins to say I am a writer, the subconscious now sees it as an identity to protect — and begins to find it easy to execute actions aligned with that identity.

This is not fake life. It is prophetic life. Abraham traveled with the name that meant father of nations — before a single child. His faith was the image he was ready to grow into. When he introduced himself, he was announcing God's declaration over him.

Purpose Is Not a Career

Purpose is that one thing for which you were created and at which you must succeed — otherwise, nothing else you succeed at will count.

Your career cannot be that one thing. There are people who excelled in their career and failed at life. There are men who were celebrated at work and despised at home. Purpose is not happiness — you should be happy in purpose, but if you make happiness your goal, it is counterintuitive. Purpose is more synonymous with sacrifice than with pleasure.

The key question is not what you do. It is who you are. And who you are must first be settled in your spirit before what you do can carry eternal weight.
