Job said, "Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips. I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food." Job 23:12
We are reigning in life by the power of the word, and the necessity of the word of God is our subject. Matthew 4:4 and Luke 4:4 both declare that man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. Why is the word so necessary? Here are twelve reasons.
Twelve Reasons the Word Is Necessary
1. The Word Is Critical to Both Natural and Spiritual Life
The word of God is literally the word of life. To live well, spiritually and naturally, the word is needed. John 6:63 says, "It is the spirit that quickeneth. The flesh profiteth nothing. The words that I speak unto you, they are spirit and they are life." Philippians 2:16 speaks of "holding forth the word of life." Anyone out of touch with the word of God is out of touch with life. John 1:1 says of the Word: that which was from the beginning, which was heard, seen, and handled of the word of life — that is what is spoken to us.
2. The Word Brings Us Into Contact With the Person of God
No one has seen God at any time, but we encounter him through his word. 1 Samuel 3:21 records that the Lord revealed himself to Samuel in Shiloh by his word. Anyone asking where God is need only step into the word. John 1:1-3 declares that in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God — so God and his word are the same. We encounter God in his word.
3. The Word Connects Us to the Voice of God
Psalm 29:3 says the voice of the Lord is upon the waters, and Ephesians 5:26 identifies that water as the word, which sanctifies and cleanses. God helps us hear him through his word.
4. The Word Provides Principles and Standards for Living
Psalm 119:105 says, "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path." Psalm 1:1-3 describes the blessed man as one who does not walk in the counsel of the ungodly, but delights in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night. The word tells us how to walk, who our friends should be, and what communication to engage in.
5. The Word Cleanses Our Lives Continually
Psalm 119:9,11 asks, "Wherewith shall a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed thereto according to thy word... Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee." Ephesians 5:26 again speaks of sanctifying and cleansing by the washing of water by the word. Every time the word is studied, it is a spiritual bath.
6. The Word Shows Us Our Inheritance in God
Acts 20:32 says, "I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified." 2 Peter 1:3-4 speaks of exceeding great and precious promises given to us, that by these we might be partakers of the divine nature. What belongs to us in God is revealed in his word.
7. The Word Is the Hope of Life
The word of God is the reason believers are not hopeless in a world where even the wealthy fall into despair. Psalm 130:5 says, "I wait for the Lord, my soul doth wait, and in his word do I hope." Psalm 119:49,81,114,116 repeat this theme of hoping in the word, and promise, "let me not be ashamed of my hope."
- A young man once sent a text message saying he had entered the wrong vehicle after being picked up by armed men who threatened him with a knife and a gun. Before his phone was seized, he managed to send one message home. The men argued among themselves, eventually pushed him out of the vehicle, and threw his phone out after him — and he was saved. The same word that assures believers of deliverance and confusion in the camp of the enemy was what carried him through.
8. The Word Is Fuel for Faith

Acts 6:7 says the word of God increased, and a great company of priests were obedient to the faith. Romans 10:17 says, "So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." Hebrews 13:7 speaks of those who have spoken the word of God, whose faith is to be followed. The word of God is the birthplace of faith.
9. The Word Builds Up Strength and Stature
1 John 2:14 says young men are strong because the word of God abides in them. When the word abides, there is spiritual strength and stature — believers are built up in spiritual muscle by the word.
10. The Word Is Fuel for Joy
Jeremiah 15:16 says, "Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart." Psalm 119:162 says, "I rejoice at thy word, as one that findeth great spoil." No one who has the word can lack joy — nothing under heaven can get out of control if the One who controls all things is in control.
11. The Word Connects Us to the Power of God
Ecclesiastes 8:4 says, "Where the word of a king is, there is power." Luke 4:32,36 records that people were astonished at Jesus' doctrine, "for his word was with power," and that with authority and power he commanded unclean spirits and they obeyed. Hebrews 1:3 says Christ upholds all things by the word of his power.
- In one healing service years ago, after meditating on Acts 5:15 — where Peter's shadow, without a word spoken, brought healing to the sick — the realization came that healing does not always require striving. Simply announcing "as I have passed, people have been healed; check yourselves" in that meeting was followed by testimonies of sight restored, growths disappearing, and the deaf hearing. It was an injection of revelation that exploded into manifestation.
12. The Word Is Our Channel of Wholeness
Psalm 107:20 says, "He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions." Luke 5:15 and Luke 6:17-19 both describe great multitudes coming to hear Jesus and being healed — as they heard, they were healed.

The Basis of Our Healing and Deliverance
What guarantees our healing, wholeness, and freedom?
1. Man Was Made in the Image and Likeness of God
Genesis 1:27 says God created man in his own image. God cannot be bound, and if God made man in his image, then the devil cannot oppress him. If you are the child of a lion, you cannot be the victim of a jackal.
2. Man Was Blessed at Creation, Before Any Curse Arose
Genesis 1:28 records that God blessed man and said, "Be fruitful." The blessing preceded any cause for a curse — the solution existed before the situation. Whatever curse a person's forefathers may have set in motion, the blessing already released cannot be outrun by it.
3. We Are Partakers of the Abrahamic Blessing
Genesis 12:3 records God telling Abraham, "In thee shall all families of the earth be blessed." No curse of barrenness could ultimately hold against Abraham — after Sarah died, in his old age, he married again and fathered six more children. Whatever tried to resist Abraham's fruitfulness and failed cannot succeed against those who carry his blessing today.
4. We Have Liberty Through the Work of the Cross
Galatians 3:13-14 says, "Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us... that the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles." Every ancestral, generational, and familiar curse was carried at Calvary.
5. We Have Liberty Through the Work of the Holy Spirit
2 Corinthians 3:17 says, "Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty."
How God Administers Liberty to His People
- Through his word — Psalm 107:20, "he sent his word, and healed them."
- Through his prophets — Hosea 12:13 says, "By a prophet the Lord brought Israel out of Egypt, and by a prophet was he preserved."
Every area of your life where there is a spell, a chain, or a captivity — tell the devil, "God made me in his image. You cannot embattle God."
