Not Every Fight Is Good

1 Timothy 6:11-12 — but thou, O man of God, flee these things, and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. Fight the good fight of faith.

2 Timothy 4:6-7 — I am now ready to be offered and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight. Paul first lived what he told Timothy.

Life is full of different fights, but not every fight is worth fighting. There are fights that drain you. There are fights that distract you. There are fights that destroy you. Not every fight deserves your energy.

People fight for titles, for status, for relationships, for appearances — but the scripture calls for one fight: the good fight of faith. You can be fighting for a spouse or fighting with your spouse — that is the wrong fight. You can be fighting for people to acknowledge you — that is the wrong fight. Ephesians 6:12 — we wrestle not against flesh and blood. Your spouse is not the enemy. Your coworker is not the enemy. Those who oppose you are not the enemy. If you fight people, you are fighting the wrong fight.

What Is the Faith We Fight For?

Jude 1:3 — earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints. The faith is our belief in Jesus Christ — who he is as the Son of God, what he did through his death and resurrection, and what he accomplished in redemption and salvation.

John 6:29 — this is the work of God: that you believe on him whom he has sent.

Righteousness is not a reward — it is a gift. Romans 5:17 — they which receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ. It is not achieved; it is received. You did not earn it — it was given. Therefore, the fight of faith is the fight to believe what God has already given.

Why You Must Fight the Fight of Faith

1. Because Faith Can Be Under Attack

   Luke 22:31-32 — Jesus said to Peter: "Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has desired to have you that he may sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you that your faith fail not."

   Even Jesus understood that faith could come under attack. The real target of the enemy is not you — it is your faith. Not your money. Not your health. Not your marriage. Not your children. It is your faith. Because if your faith fails, you fail. The enemy can weaken your faith and everything else will fall. But when the enemy does not succeed in weakening your faith, it does not matter what has been stolen — everything will rise again.

2. Because Faith Is How We Live and Stand

   Habakkuk 2:4 — the just shall live by his faith. Not your pastor's faith. Not your roommate's faith. Your faith. You cannot live by another person's headlights — the just shall live by his own faith.

   Faith is not just how we begin — it is how we continue. It is how we live. 1 Corinthians 16:13 — watch, stand fast in the faith, quit yourselves like men, be strong.

   False doctrines are everywhere on social media and in culture. But you must stand fast. You don't stand by strength or intellect alone — you stand by faith.

3. Because Faith Is How We Overcome

   1 John 5:4-5 — for whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world, and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. Who is he that overcometh the world? He that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God.

   Victory is not achieved by might — it is achieved by faith. Without believing in Jesus, you cannot overcome the world. But when you are rooted in Christ, you are not trying to become an overcomer — you already are one.

4. Because Faith Can Drift If Neglected

   Hebrews 3:12-14 — take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God. Exhort one another daily. For we are made partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast unto the end.

   Faith must be guarded. The fight of faith keeps you anchored. If you stop fighting for faith, you stop walking in victory.

5. Because Faith Is the Shield Against the Enemy

   Ephesians 6:16 — above all, lift up the protective shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.

   Faith protects. No faith, no defense. The enemy does not fear your possessions — he fears the faith you possess. He fears faith because faith blocks his attacks.

6. Because Others Depend on Your Faith

   2 Timothy 1:5 — when I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in you, Timothy, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice. Timothy grew in faith by watching his mother and grandmother.

   There are people who will not know Christ until they see your lifestyle. When your daughter looks at you, does she hear faith? When people around you hear you speak, do they hear faith? Your faith is not just for you — others are watching and learning.

   Fight the good fight of faith because others are depending on you. There are people who stay in God because of you. There are people who see possibilities in Christ because of what they observe in your life.

How to Fight the Good Fight of Faith

1. Intentionally Follow People of Faith

   Hebrews 10:25 — not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is, but encouraging one another. Hebrews 6:12 — imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

   Get into associations where conversations stir up hunger for God. You need this especially in seasons when you feel weak. They don't have to be your closest friends, but they must be your community. 2 Timothy 2:22 — flee youthful lusts and follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

2. Be Planted in a Church

   Be planted — not just attending anywhere. Join a Bible-believing church. Have a pastor over you. Serve in the house. Be connected. Go to a connect or cell group. The questions you cannot ask on Sunday are the ones connect groups exist for.

   Acts 2:42 — they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, in breaking of bread. You cannot grow if you are not planted. No seed grows without being placed in the ground.

   Psalm 92:13-14 — those that be planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of our God.

The fight of faith begins with a personal relationship with Jesus. You cannot fight the good fight of faith if you have not given your life to Christ.
