Knowing the Original

There is a man who could spot a counterfeit $50 bill the moment he saw it — not because he had studied fake currency, but because he had studied the original so thoroughly that any deviation was immediately obvious.

We don't go looking for false teachers. We study the original so well that the false becomes self-evident.

We don't pray against false teachers either — Jesus said they would come. You cannot be more prophetic than prophecy. So we don't pray against them; we plan against them.

This matter is so important to God that one of the functions of praying in tongues is to sharpen discernment against false teaching.

Signs of False Teaching — Jude's Warning

Jude 4 — Certain men have crept in unnoticed.

Jude 8 — One of the signs of a false teacher is insulting fathers. Whatever makes a person comfortable insulting spiritual fathers is a sign of false teaching. Speaking passionately does not exempt anyone. The people who killed Jesus were religious leaders.

Jude 11 outlines three errors to avoid:

  1. The Way of Cain — jealousy and envy. Envy is seeing what you desire, concluding you cannot have it, and beginning to hate it. An envious person likes what they see; they simply resent that it belongs to someone else. If you cannot train yourself to celebrate favor in other people's lives, favor will remain far from you.

  3. The Error of Balaam — merchandising your gift. Using ministry as a commercial vehicle.
  4. The Rebellion of Korah — speaking evil of those above you, positioning yourself as better than those in authority over you.

The Danger of Knowing Only in Part

Acts 18:24–26 — Apollos was eloquent and fervent in spirit. He taught accurately the things of the Lord. But he knew only the baptism of John. If you had listened to him preach on a particular subject, you would have believed his was the only truth — yet God had moved beyond the place where Apollos was standing.

There are many eloquent people who know only in part.

The difference between a false teacher and a wrong teacher is response to correction. Apollos received correction. Priscilla and Aquila took him aside privately — they did not interrupt him mid-message — and explained the scriptures to him more accurately. When he desired to cross to Achaia, the brethren wrote and commended him: this man has been properly taught; receive him.

What translates a person from wrong to false is when correction is offered and they continue to argue, dig in, and merchandise their error.

When scripture is explained to someone and they continue regardless — then we can conclude they know what they are doing.

Doctrine of Devils

1 Timothy 4:1 — In later times, some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons.

Just as God has churches, the enemy also has churches.

1 Timothy 4:2–3 — Speaking lies in hypocrisy, forbidding to marry, commanding abstinence from foods. When a system declares celibacy as the marker of purity, the Bible does not call it consecration — it calls it doctrine of devils.

False teaching is not only encouraging sin. There is a version of it that pushes consecration until it walks into walls. And those fighting for balance are not wrong — extreme positions in either direction lead to error.

Election of Grace

There is something called election of grace. Some gifts are given, not earned. A six-year-old child with no prayer life can operate in striking accuracy of the prophetic — not because she pressed in, but because it was given. Pressing and striving for what God did not assign is exhausting and fruitless. Many people are worn out by religion that was never theirs to carry.

If God is Father, why should a son beg him to provide?

Most people are carrying loads God never gave them. The Christian life is powered by the Spirit. Serving God with zeal is different from serving by the Spirit with zeal. Mechanical Christianity breaks people.

Ezekiel's Two Sets of Ministers

Ezekiel 44:10–15 describes two categories of priests:

  • Priests who went astray — They ministered to the people before their idols. They preached what the people wanted to hear. They did surveys to find out audience preference, and shaped their ministry around the result. God says they shall bear their iniquity. They will still be working — praise nights, programs, activity. But God has distanced himself from them. You get the pastor you deserve.
  • Sons of Zadok — These kept charge of the sanctuary when Israel went astray. They did not follow the crowd. These shall come near to minister to God, to stand before him, to offer him the fat and the blood.

A holy person in a false ministry will not remain there long. There is a grace that opens a person's eyes and causes them to recognize: this is not my place.

Itching Ears

2 Timothy 4:3–4 — A time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine. According to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers. They will turn their ears away from the truth and be turned toward fables.

Consumer Christianity starts the story of the woman with the issue of blood from her technique of appropriating faith — and never mentions that she touched Jesus. The goal becomes how to collect from God, not God himself.

Isaiah 30:9–10 — Lying children who do not want to hear the law of the Lord, who say to the prophets: do not prophesy to us right things. Speak to us smooth things.

Jeremiah 5:30–31 — A horrible and shocking thing has happened. The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests rule by their own power. And the people love to have it so.

Ezekiel 33:31–32 — They come and sit before the teacher as people, and they hear the words but do not do them. With their mouth they show much love, but their hearts pursue gain.

The Antidote — Isaiah's Instruction

Isaiah 8:19–22 — When they say consult mediums and familiar spirits, who whisper and mutter — should not a people consult their God? — tell them: study the scriptures.

Some people claim access to portals, ancient mantles, mysteries of heavenly candlesticks. Jesus came from the holiest of holies and taught in parables. Nothing is more empowering than the Holy Spirit who is already on the inside.

Get in touch with the dead? — The prophet says: no. We go to the law and the testimony. People who try the other ways get nowhere. A dead end.

How can there be a full church service with no reference to the character of Jesus, and yet people are expected to be transformed? They go out and steal and cheat — because they are not hearing what could change them.

Build Yourself

Ask any average believer what it means to have the Spirit of God on the inside, and they will not be able to articulate it. Ask where the text explaining the gospel is found, and many do not know 1 Corinthians 15:1–4.

Once a person does not have a correct altar of knowledge, they are worshiping a strange god.

There is prayer in every religion. What distinguishes prayer to God is theology. Wrong theology about Jesus means not worshiping Jesus, regardless of the language used.

Nobody should have access to your heart and ears without scripture. Build yourself to the level where no one can deceive you — not by hunting false teachers, but by knowing the original so thoroughly that anything else is immediately obvious.

Lord, build your people in the knowledge of your word. Let the love of the body of Christ be genuine in this generation. Let there be a oneness among ministers — a unity of message, a unity of purpose. Establish the sons of Zadok in this hour, those who kept charge of the sanctuary when others went astray. Let that be our portion. In Jesus' name.

Inspiring Quote

Sermon

"One symptom of backsliding is that you begin to look down on the simple things that keep you on fire, calling a devotional 'just milk.' It's not about the information, it's about the consistency."
