Did Jesus Become Poor So I Can Be Physically Or Spiritually Rich? by Pastor Philip Olubakin: MP3 Download & Sermon Notes
Jesus Became Poor So That You, Through His Poverty, Might Be Rich
lightbulb Message Summary - Key Nuggets
- Satan Controls the Wealth of This World: Adam handed dominion — and with it, the wealth of the earth — to Satan at the fall. That is why Satan could offer it to Jesus. It had been given to him. Luke 4:6
- Jesus Became Poor Deliberately: He was rich in heaven. He became poor on earth. The purpose was specific: so that you, through his poverty, would become rich. 2 Corinthians 8:9
- Poverty Is Part of the Curse: Genesis 3 shows that toiling to eat was not original design — it came with the curse. Christ redeemed us from the curse completely. Galatians 3:13
- Christians Must Step Out Boldly: Believers are often held back by the fear of stepping outside God's will. But God is not a wicked father who watches you fall into ditches. Step out — when it is your time, God will position you like Joseph.

Satan Controls the Wealth of This World
Luke 4:5-7
When the devil tempted Jesus, he took him to a high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world — and said: all this power I will give you, for it has been delivered to me. Who delivered it to him?
Adam did. When Adam committed treason in the garden, he handed over dominion — and with it, the wealth, the glory, the power, and the resources of the earth. Satan said to Jesus: I can give this to whoever I will.
That is why unbelievers can prosper. That is why money and influence flow to people who do not serve God. Satan controls the distribution of earthly wealth — and he gives it to those who, willingly or ignorantly, serve his agenda.
Jesus Became Poor So You Could Be Rich
2 Corinthians 8:9
You know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ: though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, that you through his poverty might become rich. This is a statement about physical and material wealth, not only spiritual blessing.
Jesus was not poor in heaven. He chose poverty on earth as a deliberate act of substitution. He became poor so that the poverty he bore would not have to be borne by you.
If all he did was die for your sins — why did he also need to bear poverty? Because poverty, like sickness, is part of what the curse placed on humanity. The cross covered all of it.
The Fall Introduced Poverty
Genesis 3:17-19
God said to Adam: in sorrow you shall eat of the ground all the days of your life. It shall bring forth thorns for you. In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread. This was not original design. There was no toiling before sin. The ground bearing thorns was the literal picture of the curse — and Jesus wore those thorns as a crown.
Step Out Like Joseph
One of the greatest things holding believers back from wealth and influence is fear — the fear of stepping outside God's will. But God is not a wicked father who folds his hands and watches you walk into a ditch. He will get the truth to you.
When Pharaoh called Joseph out of prison, Joseph did not hesitate. He did not say he was not qualified. He stood up, he spoke, and he delivered. God gave him a mouth and wisdom that no one could resist.
When it is your time, stand up and speak. The Holy Ghost gives you what to say in the moment you need it. Step out.
Christ bore the poverty. You inherit the abundance. Now move.
