Destroyers of the Divine Life

Our objective is to understand the forces that destroy the life of God in man.

Genesis 3:1-7

Adam and Eve were created in the image and likeness of God. They were created with the breath of God. They functioned in spirituality, in supernaturality, in vitality, in liberty. They were essentially highly spiritual and supernatural beings. How Adam communicated with the animals to the extent of naming them, how Adam was able to hear the serpent speak, was highly supernatural.

But something happened, and there was a fall. There was a crash of Adam, a crash of Eve. The outcome was them being ushered out of the Garden of Eden to live the normal, natural, earthly life. It was a fall from grace to grass. They became instant humanity, because God had told them the moment they ate of that fruit, they would die. They did not die physically. They were still alive physically, but the life of God in them had died.

What is it that we must look out for if the life of God in us must not die? These are the destroyers.

1. Engagement With the Wrong Company

   The beginning of the crash of Adam and Eve was when they decided to engage with the serpent. There are many Christians who have destroyed their spiritual lives, destroyed their commitment to God, destroyed their possibilities in God, by involvement and engagement with the wrong company.

   Proverbs 13:20

   When Samson decided to engage with the company of the Philistines, that was his destruction. It is one thing to keep an immoral company; it is another thing entirely for that company to be the company of your enemy's people. Samson was in company with a woman, and that was the people who were looking for his head. The power, the anointing, the grace of God on his life got destroyed.

   Proverbs 27:17

   Evil communication corrupteth good manners. The disaster of humanity began when Eve decided to engage with the serpent. Be careful who is in your immediate company. They might affect the grace of God on your life. They might affect the potentials you carry, and they might affect what you become.

   • How many people have gotten destroyed because of who they married? There was a young lady anointed of God, with a voice like the voice of an angel in singing. From age twelve, thirteen, fourteen, she was already an impactful minister of the gospel, until she married the wrong person. That wrong person turned her into the shadow of herself. Today she has not handled a microphone to minister in many years. A life and destiny ruined by connection with the wrong company.

2. Openness to the Wrong Counsel

   The first one flows into the next. Your company will affect your counsel. Company affects counsel, company affects mindset, company affects choices because they determine your counsel. The serpent brought a counsel to Eve, and eventually to Adam, that was a disastrous counsel.

   Psalm 1:1-3

   The counsel you walk in determines the place you will end at. Where you end is a product of what you hear. Who you give your ear to is whom you have given your life to. If you doubt this, ask Eve. If you doubt this, ask Samson. If you doubt this, ask Amnon, the son of David, who received a destructive counsel from Jonadab on how to defile his sister without being caught.

   Adam was lost and Eve was kicked out of the garden. Samson lost his hair, lost his eyes, lost his unction, and later lost his life. Amnon was killed by Absalom. Whose advice are you hearing? Whose counsel have you opened your ear to?

   • Every counsel that sets you against God is a destructive counsel.
   • Every counsel that makes you feel like you can do without God is a destructive counsel.
   • Every counsel that makes you question God is a destructive counsel.
   • Every counsel that makes you big in your own eyes is a destructive counsel.

   The person talking to you, who is he? What is his relationship with God? What are his values? What are his results with God? Where is he headed to?

3. Lack of Understanding of God's Word

   This destroys the divine nature.

   Proverbs 21:16

   Eve obviously did not understand the instruction that God gave. When the serpent asked, "Has God said you should not eat?" Eve said God said they should not even touch it. She did not know exactly what God said. There are many people who carry the Bible, but they don't know what the Bible carries. You must not only carry the Bible, you must understand what God is saying per time. Otherwise you can be led into error, led to begin to doubt God, led into rebellion.

   John 10:35

   If you have access to the word, if you have understanding of the word, it enhances your divine stature. They were called gods because the word came to them and they got an understanding of it. Why are so many Christians not manifesting where God wants them to manifest? Why are they not impacting their world the way they should? Because of the lack of understanding of God's word.

4. Lack of Understanding of Who We Are in God

   When you don't know who you are, you lose yourself in this world. Eve did not know who she was, because the Bible said God made man, that is Adam and Eve, in His image. Satan was advertising to Eve that she would become like God, when she would only be becoming what she already was. She was already created in the image and likeness of God. The devil was advertising to her that she should get what was not missing, that she should get what was not lost, that she should become what she already was. Many people consult false spiritual sources because they don't truly know who they are.

   Psalm 49:12,20

   He has a position in God, a stature in God, but he doesn't know who he is.

   Psalm 82:5-6

   There are things we must know in life: we must know who God is, we must know who we are, we must know what our purpose on earth is. Knowledge is critical to success. People fail exams not because they were not present in class, but because they didn't understand the subject. We will fail massively in our spiritual journey if we don't understand who God is and who we are. Eve had no understanding, and she was deceived, and she perished. That will never be your portion.

5. The Crave for Independence From God

   When people want to be independent of God, they end up insufficient in life. When the serpent was advertising that Eve could become like God and not need God, the implication was that God was hiding something from her, that she could arrive at His status. Many people want to be free from God, free from the world, free from the church, free from the Bible. That freedom is a freedom of disaster - like a car free from its driver, like a tree free from its root, like a building free from its foundation.

   Genesis 3:4-5

   I want it to be clear to everyone that the best of man is found in God. When God was creating the earth, anything He spoke to became the habitat of what He created there. He spoke to the water, and water became the house of fishes; the best of fish is found inside water. He spoke to the sky, and birds came into the sky; their best is found up there. He spoke to the earth, and plants came out of the earth; the best of plants is in the earth. He spoke to Himself, and man came out of God. So the best of man happens inside God.

   To try to succeed without God as a man, to try to thrive, is like a plant trying to thrive without the earth, a fish trying to thrive without the water, a bird trying to thrive without the air. We cannot crave to be independent of God.

6. Disobedience and Rebellion to God's Word

   Eve was outrightly disobedient. Don't eat the fruit - I will eat it. Don't eat the fruit - I will eat it. That is rebellion, that is disobeying God, that is rebelling against God.

   Psalm 68:6

   Adam and Eve dried up spiritually the moment they rebelled against God. You know that this is what God is saying, you know that this is the law of God, and you deliberately rebel - you dry up spiritually. Many of us have dried up because we have consistently violated God's word in lifestyle, in practices, in financial practices, in all manner. That will never be your portion in the name of Jesus Christ.

7. The Spirit of This World

   This is a killer of the life of God. When Eve saw that the tree was good for food, that is the lust of the flesh. When she saw it was pleasant to the eyes, that is the lust of the eyes. When she saw it was to be desired to make one wise, that is the pride of life.

   1 John 2:15-17

   There are so many people God cannot do many things with, because of the pride of life - the pride that scattered Lucifer from heaven and turned him into a devil, the pride that removed Queen Vashti from the throne of the Persian Empire, the pride that killed Absalom because he wanted to overthrow his father, the pride that turned Nebuchadnezzar into an animal, the pride that killed Herod and turned him to worms as an angel smote him.

   The nature of God cannot coexist with pride, because pride is the original luciferic sin - the sin that originated in heaven, found in Lucifer when he decided, "I will be like God. I will ascend above the heights of the clouds. I will be like the Most High." That scattered him from heaven. Pride reminds God of luciferic rebellion. Every time a man or a woman is manifesting pride, it reminds God of the nature that turned Lucifer into Satan.

   Numbers 13:33

   How you see yourself is the determinant of how God, the devil, and anybody else will see you, especially the devil. It is critical that we understand who we are in God.

So we have: engagement with the wrong company, openness to the wrong counsel, the lack of understanding of God's word, the lack of understanding of who we are in God, the crave for independence from God, disobedience and rebellion, and the spirit of this world. These are destroyers of the life of God in the life of a person. I believe that today somebody is receiving freedom from these destroyers.
