The Promise That Guarantees the Gift
Nobody who is genuinely trusting God for the gift of tongues needs to go away empty. This confidence is not rooted in any minister's ability — it is rooted in the authority of Scripture. Jesus said in Luke 11:11–13: which of you fathers, if your son asks for fish, would give him a snake instead? Or if he asks for an egg, would give him a scorpion? If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?
Two things follow from this:
- You cannot ask Jesus for the gift of the Holy Spirit and not receive. If you believe in the final authority of the word of God, you should not struggle to receive this.
- You cannot genuinely ask for the gift of tongues and receive something counterfeit. The notion that honest believers who open their spirits to receive this gift could end up deceiving themselves — on the authority of God's word, that cannot happen.

It is possible to receive something and not know that you have received it. There are ample examples of this in Scripture — to the degree that Paul prays that the eyes of understanding would be flooded with light.
Consider the person who believes the gift of tongues must come by the Holy Spirit involuntarily taking hold of them — physically moving their tongue, producing some echo from within. Such a person will conclude nothing has happened because they are waiting passively. But Scripture is clear: the Holy Spirit does the filling; you do the speaking.
Acts 2 — On the day of Pentecost, they were filled with the Spirit and spoke with tongues. The Holy Ghost did the filling. They did the speaking. No one will speak for you.
Anyone Who Thirsts Will Receive
John 7:37–38 — On the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out: "If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. He who believes in me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water."
The Holy Spirit does not cherry-pick. He does not decide arbitrarily who gets to speak in tongues and who does not. Jesus said if anyone thirsts. The only requirement is desire. The Bible says to covet earnestly spiritual gifts. But notice — Jesus does not stop at "I'm thirsty, I'm waiting." He says: drink.

The provision is already available in abundance. You go and get it.
After prayer, do not simply wait to see what happens. Believe that the provision is already available. Paul wrote that Christ, being exalted to the right hand of the Father and having received the promise of the Holy Spirit, has shed it forth. God has done His part. What follows is to drink.
The Step of Faith
There is a step of faith to speaking in tongues. There has to be. How else would someone confidently speak in a language that sounds like rubbish to themselves, yet in the spirit is speaking mysteries?
The only way to know the meaning of what is being said is through the separate gift of interpretation of tongues. But the sign that tongues is working is not understanding — it is edification. You know by edification, not by understanding. The Bible says your understanding is unfruitful.
As the focus is placed on the promise of God and the step of speaking is taken, there will be a ventilation happening in the spirit. A stirring. A getting stirred. That is how you know.
Requirements Before Receiving
- You must be born again. Jesus said in John 14:16–17, speaking of the promise of the Spirit: "He dwells with you and will be in you." It is those who have received Christ who then receive His Spirit. Peter confirmed this on the day of Pentecost: "The promise is to you and to your children."
For anyone not yet born again:
A Confession of Faith to Receive
Taking the Step — Begin to Speak
Do not wait in the boat. Jump in and walk on water. Even if it is one syllable, do it in faith. The Lord will add to you. The goal is to speak — so wherever you are, begin to pray in the Spirit.
The Greek word for this gift is charismata — meaning it becomes second nature. It is not a one-off event. Once the gift of tongues is received, it is not a moment to mark and move on from — it becomes a permanent dimension of your spiritual life. You will never be the same.
Receive the Holy Ghost. Out of your belly flows rivers of living water. This gift is yours — walk in it daily.
Spend extended time praying in the Spirit. Give it at least five minutes — let it become registered. This is a second nature, not a one-off encounter. It follows you forever.
