The Gospel Is the Answer to Every Affliction

Romans 1:16: "I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believes — to the Jew first and also to the Greek."

This one verse gives the answer to all the afflictions of humanity. When you look at believers and see the way they struggle — struggling with demons, struggling with sin, struggling with diverse negative circumstances — you have to wonder: is Christianity just another religion? Does this thing actually have an existential impact on life?

The truth is that it does. The evidences and proofs in scripture are overwhelming. But here is the conclusion: the reason believers are going through what they are going through — if they are truly believers — is one of two possibilities. Either they don't believe the gospel, or the gospel is not actually what is being taught.

Paul said it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believes. So believers are only permitted to remain in their struggle if they don't believe. The moment they believe, Paul said the gospel has the power to save them from whatsoever.

The Crisis of an Impotent Gospel

We may be preaching a lot of things from the Bible — but if what people are hearing is truly the gospel, then unless they don't believe it, the moment they believe it, salvation — in all its dimensions — should be the proof.

• If a believer is oppressed by demons, he has not heard the gospel. He may have been in church for 20 years. But the Bible says if he hears the gospel, it should bring him salvation from that oppression.
• If a believer is trapped in the web of sin — not occasionally falling and rising, but chronically trapped — he has not heard the gospel.
• If a believer is living under diverse contrary and negative circumstances with no way out, one of the major problems is that he has not heard the gospel.

It doesn't matter the church he belongs to. It doesn't matter how consistent he is in attendance. It doesn't matter how long he has been going. Paul said if you hear the gospel and believe it, salvation comes. So the failure of transformation is a failure of gospel preaching, not a failure of the gospel itself.

What Makes the Gospel Transformational

The word gospel — euangelion in Greek, bisora in Hebrew — means good news. But not just any good news. This is news of a royal decree. It is a declaration that has power to bring salvation to one who is dead and condemned — to bring them back to life and give them freedom.

Three broad categories define the message of the transformational gospel:

1. The Gospel Addresses the Problem of Sin

   Romans 3:23: "For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God." Romans 6:23: "The wages of sin is death — but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." All have sinned. All are awaiting the consequence of sin — death. The gospel announces that the consequence has been absorbed by Christ and that eternal life is now a gift available to all who receive it. This is not the whole gospel — but it is the entry point.

2. The Gospel Addresses the Restoration of the Earth

   Psalm 82:5–6: because of the fall of man, the earth itself fell. The foundations of the earth are out of course. The gospel does not just save individual souls — it is the instrument of cosmic restoration. Romans 8:19–21: the creation waits eagerly for the manifestation of the sons of God, because the creation itself will be delivered from the bondage of corruption. The transformational gospel has cosmic dimensions.

3. The Gospel Addresses the Fullness of Salvation

   The Greek word translated salvation — sozo — means to save, heal, deliver, protect, preserve, make whole. The transformational gospel is not just about going to heaven when you die. It is about the full package of sozo — spirit, soul, body, circumstances, relationships, finances — being brought under the lordship of Christ and the power of His redemption.

Why Paul Was Not Ashamed

Paul had seen the gospel work. He had seen it transform a persecutor into an apostle — himself. He had seen it heal the sick in Ephesus, drive out demons in Philippi, raise the dead in Troas, turn entire cities in Asia Minor upside down. He was not ashamed because he had witnessed, firsthand, that the power was real.

The gospel is not a collection of doctrines to be memorized. It is a force — the power of God — to be unleashed. Wherever it is truly preached and truly believed, transformation is not optional. It is inevitable.
