The Question Of God by Apostle Emmanuel Iren: MP3 Download & Sermon Notes
Every Desire Points To A Creator — And The Bible Passes Every Test Of Antiquity
lightbulb Message Summary - Key Nuggets
- The Argument from Desire: Every natural desire has a corresponding object. The universal, inborn longing for the divine points to a Creator who placed eternity in the heart of every human being.
- Intelligent Design: Behind every design is a designer. The existence of ordered complexity in creation points to an intelligent Creator — this is not religious assumption but logical inference.
- Everyone Walks by Faith: Atheists who demand "unequivocal evidence" for God walk by faith every day — trusting airline pilots they've never met, eating food they haven't tested, trusting traffic lights others will obey.
- The Bible Passes Antiquity Tests: The New Testament has over 10,000 manuscripts — more than any ancient document. The more manuscripts, the easier it is to verify accuracy. The Bible passes in flying colours.
- Be Ready to Give a Defence: 1 Peter 3:15 — sanctify Christ as Lord, and always be ready to give a defence of the hope within you, with meekness and fear.

Why Does Everyone Worship Something?
Go to any civilisation that nobody has been to — they are worshipping something. In Acts 17, the Athenians had so many gods that they even erected an altar to "the Unknown God" — just in case there was one they had missed. Most religions are not disproving Christianity; they are trying to fill a blank that Christianity names.
The existence of different religions does not discredit Christianity — it proves it. It proves that at the end of the day, everybody is quietly looking for something divine. Even vices are a form of this thirst. Jesus said to the woman at the well: "The water that you drink, you've been drinking every day and you are still thirsty." Everyone is looking for the satisfaction that only God can provide.
The Argument from Desire
Every natural and innate desire has a corresponding object. When you are hungry, food exists. When you are tired, rest exists. When you are lonely, companionship exists. Why then, in every human civilisation throughout history, is there an insatiable desire for something divine — if nothing divine exists to satisfy it?
Ecclesiastes 3:11: He has placed eternity in the human heart. If you see someone who has come to a point of unbelief, it is either situational, or they have deliberately darkened their understanding. A fool says in his heart there is no God.
Everyone Walks by Faith
Those who demand unequivocal proof before believing in God use faith constantly:
- You board a plane without knowing the pilot's personal history
- You eat in a restaurant without testing every ingredient for poison
- You stop at a green light trusting that cross-traffic will obey the red
When a critic says, "I believe in evolution," the fair question is: "Did you personally test every claim, or did you read what others did?" We all operate on testimony and trust — the question is whose testimony you will trust.
The Bible Passes Every Standard Test of Antiquity
The standard secular method for verifying ancient documents is manuscript count and internal consistency. More manuscripts make it easier to detect corruption — not harder:
- Homer's Iliad: ~600 manuscripts
- New Testament: over 10,000 manuscripts
- The Dead Sea Scrolls confirmed that the Old Testament text we have today matches scrolls over a thousand years older — virtually identical
Jesus is the most documented person in ancient history — both by friends and enemies. Non-Christian historians of the first century wrote about him. An argument that Jesus never existed is not an intellectual argument — it is a position no serious scholar holds.
Be Ready to Give a Defence
1 Peter 3:15: "Sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defence to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you — with meekness and fear."
Do not be afraid to challenge culture. Do not be afraid to say what you believe. There will be pressure — in academia, at work, online. But the truth is not fragile. Know your Bible well enough to engage. There is nothing to hide. Sanctify the Lord in your heart — give Him His sacred space, treat His knowledge as distinct and worthy.
You will not be neutral. You will not be intimidated into hiding your convictions. God in you is greater than every argument raised against the knowledge of God. In Jesus' mighty name.
