Why We Worship God

We'll consider a few scriptures. Exodus 15:11 — Who is like unto thee, O Lord, among the gods? Who is like thee? You are glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders.

Daniel 4:3 — How great are his signs and how mighty are his wonders. His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom and his dominion is from generation to generation.

Psalm 86:10 — For thou art great and doest wondrous things. Thou art God alone.

According to Acts 20:32, the word of God is able to build you up and to give you an inheritance among those who are sanctified. When the word of God comes, it comes to enlighten, to build, to empower. God's method for empowering men is through his word. The word of God builds you to the capacity that makes it befitting for you to walk in the experience of dominion.

There are many reasons why we worship God. I'll give you at least four of them as a foundation.

• We are his creation and so we owe him worship. Even though he has upgraded us to be called sons, generically speaking, he is the creator of all things. Any other thing that was not God was created.
• There is none else like him. It is not a church cliche. There truly is no God like him. From Genesis to Revelation, we find many idols or heathenistic kings who try to mimic gods — from Dagon to all kinds of gods. He is not the greatest, he is the only. In truth, all other gods are the works of men. John 17:3 — This is life everlasting, that they may know thee, the only true God, and Jesus whom thou hast sent.
• Because of the extent of his power and his dominion. Our worship goes beyond just a command. It is a response to the vastness of his greatness. There is something about God that when you see and comprehend, your natural response, as proof that you have truly understood, is worship.
• Because we truly love him. The dimension of grace and power that flows through your life is according to the revelation of God that you have. Daniel 11:32 — The people that do know their God shall be strong and shall do exploit. 2 Peter 1:2 — Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge. So grace and peace, dominion and power at any level, is multiplied through the knowledge of God.

Three Ways We Come Into the Knowledge of God

As mysterious and as mighty as God is, he can be known. God wants to be known. He has always desired to reveal himself to man.

First: Through the Study of His Nature and His Attributes

It is impossible to truly know who God is except and unless we explore his nature and his attributes.

From a theological standpoint, there is what we call the exclusive attributes of God — attributes that brand him in a class all by himself. There are six of them:

1. God is eternal. The fact that he is eternal brands him in a class all by himself.
2. God is self-existent. Nobody participated in him being God. The Bible says in the beginning — not from the beginning. From the beginning implies there was a point where he started. In the beginning means in the middle of something, a stretch no man's intelligence can fathom. He does not derive his life and vitality from any other entity. He is the central life source that powers everything.
3. God is omnipresent. He fills all things and is in all.
4. God is immutable. He does not change. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
5. God is omniscient. God's knowledge is not progressive. He does not study. He does not read. He cannot be mentored. His realm is now — everything happens right before him. That is why when he tells you to rejoice in the midst of storms, it is because he already knows the tomorrow you do not know. Jeremiah 29:11 — I know the thoughts that I think towards you, sayeth the Lord, they are thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you an expected end. He is called alpha and omega — not beginning and end in sequence. He does not need to leave the beginning to be at the end. He fills all things.
6. God is omnipotent. Omnipotent means absolute power. Power, not some power, belongs to God. God does not have authority in the conventional sense — authority must be conferred by someone greater and supervised by that person. Man has authority because God gave him. But God himself has absolute power. He needs no license from anyone. His dominion is absolute; our dominion is derived. When he stands concerning your matter and says you are free, you are healed, you are delivered — there is no other power that can counter that ruling.

There are also shared attributes of God — attributes that constitute his nature which he has decided to share with man:

• God is light — man is also light.
• God is holy — man has the capacity to be holy.
• God is spirit — man is spirit.
• God is love — men can be carriers of love.
• God is faithful — men can be faithful.
• God is righteous — righteousness is imputed to us today.
• God is merciful — blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.

When you come to worship God, you come before the one who is interested in your life and your future, not the one who is there to condemn you. The Bible says his mercy triumphs over judgment. Let us therefore come boldly — not arrogantly — that we may obtain grace and find help in time of need (Hebrews 4:16).

The first wonder of God is a display of his attributes — that he is spirit, that God is light, that God is holy, that God is just, that God is good.

When Moses said, "Show me your glory," God responded: "I will let my goodness pass before thee." Being good is the resultant effect of having other qualities. You must be thoughtful, compassionate, kind. It is this added together that produces goodness. The goodness of God that leads men to repentance. The goodness of God that causes him to daily load us with benefits.

Second: Through the Study of His Wisdom

Isaiah 40:28 — Hast thou not known? Hast thou not heard? The everlasting God, the Lord, the creator of the ends of the earth, fainted not neither is he weary. There is no searching of his understanding.

1 Timothy 1:17 — Now unto the king eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God.

Psalm 19:1 — The heavens declare the glory of God and the firmament shows his handiwork. When God is involved in any creative process, there is always a marvel.

Psalm 139:14 — I will praise you for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. The word fearful there does not mean to run away — it means to cause awe. You always know what God molded because there will be a marvel in it.

When you want to learn the wisdom of God, there are three areas you look at:

1. The heavens
2. The earth
3. Man

Medical science teaches us that the average human body has between 30 to 37 trillion cells. There are about 78 organs in the human body. At least five of them are vital organs — the brain, the heart, the liver, the lungs, the kidneys. If one of these fails, it distorts optimal functionality. Yet God manages 8.2 billion people on earth and does not need to come to earth to verify if you woke up. There is a wisdom that has been invested. How will you not worship such a God?

Healing is an expression of God's wisdom. The one who created 30 to 37 trillion cells by his wisdom — there must be a way of redeeming those organs.

Ephesians 3:10 — That now unto principalities and powers in heavenly places might be made known the manifold, multi-layered wisdom of God.

One of the greatest displays of the wisdom of God was using the foolishness of death to redeem man. The Bible says if they had known — this is called the hidden wisdom of God — they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. When Satan was instigating men to crucify Jesus, it was wisdom being displayed. Death for him was not punishment. It was a channel to go to Hades and collect the keys. According to Peter's epistle, he opened the gates to the departed saints and said, "You are free. Come, let us go." He resurrected as the firstborn of the begotten.

What Jesus did is like a man who always had a PhD but had it alone. Then he stripped himself of it and became like an illiterate — went back to nursery, primary, secondary school, university. At the point of obtaining PhD again, he did something profound: he carried you along. He grafted you in him by covenant. Apostle Paul received that revelation: "I have been crucified with Christ — not just that Jesus died for me. Jesus died. But I died too, in him. And when he rose again, I rose again in him. Now that he is seated, I am seated with him." He calls us partakers of his divine nature.

Through the foolishness of the gospel, if any man believes that report, the power of God is released. Only a fool will say in his heart there is no God. Romans 1:20 — For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and godhead, so that they are without excuse.

The real value of wisdom, at its core, creates a desire in you to allow that dimension of his wisdom to find expression in you — because as he is, so are we. Everyone who is born of God genuinely must have a dimension of the wisdom of God revealed in their life, eventually beyond age, beyond academic qualification. That is the value of the Holy Spirit — there is a dimension called the spirit of wisdom.

Third: Through the Study of His Power

Exodus 15:1-13 — Then sang Moses and the children of Israel this song: I will sing unto the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously. The Lord is my strength and song. The Lord is a man of war. Thy right hand, O God, is become glorious in power. Who is like unto thee, O Lord, among the gods? Glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders.

God is not only a good God. He is not only the all-wise God. He is all-powerful.

Psalm 77:14 — Thou art the God that doeth wonders. Thou hast declared thy strength among the people.

Psalm 105:5 — Remember his marvelous works which he has done, his wonders and the judgments of his mouth.

Job 5:9 — Which doeth great things and unsearchable, marvelous things without number.

Psalm 40:5 — Many, O Lord my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done; they cannot be reckoned up in order.

Luke 18:27 — The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.

There are things in your life you do not need wisdom for — you need power. When the enemy attacks you, you need power. Psalm 66:3 — Say unto God, how terrible art thou in thy works. Through the greatness of thy power shall thine enemies submit themselves to thee.

This kingdom is a kingdom of power. There are miracles that when men see them, it will compel them to go on their knees. When Peter saw the miraculous catch of fish he recognized who Jesus was and said, "Depart from me, I am a sinner."

Three Results of the Knowledge of God

When you know God's attributes, learn his wisdom, and comprehend the extent of his power:

1. The spirit of faith is imparted upon you — the capacity to believe God. It gives you the confidence to live out your divine destiny, to manifest the character of Christ through your life. The goal is not just to know that God has it, but to know that what he has can flow through you.
2. You receive supernatural empowerment to demonstrate what you have learned. The purpose of learning these attributes of God is not just so that you would know and wonder, but that you become a wonder yourself. The Bible says as he is, so are we. Your knowledge is not complete if it just produces an educated orientation. If God is love, then I can manifest love. If God is merciful, then that mercy can be at work in me. If God is the all-wise God, his wisdom can find expression in my life. If God is all-powerful, then a measure of that power can flow through me.
3. It causes praise and worship to continually rise from you. Psalm 150:6 — Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.

The nature of Christ plus the wisdom of Christ plus the power of Christ equals the fullness of Christ. When the Bible says the fullness of Christ be formed in men, it is his character, then his wisdom, then his power. If you have the wisdom of Christ without the nature of Christ, you will be like the wise serpent — very wise, but without character. If you have only the nature of Christ, you will be good but you will not build anything, because wisdom is what builds. Every time you see lopsidedness in the making of a believer, one of these dimensions has been omitted.

He who is called Wonderful Counselor — you too can become a wonder to many. He said, "I and the children that the Lord has given me, we are for signs" (Isaiah 8:18). When the power of God is revealed through you, men cannot see God directly — but you become today the visible expression of God.

The end of that journey is found in Galatians 1:24 — And they glorified God in me. Not just that they glorified God. God can be glorified in a man.
