An Unlimited Possibility

There is an unlimited possibility attached to Matthew 18:19-20. The scripture reads: "If two of you shall agree on earth as touching anything that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them."

You will find that in this prayer invitation, Jesus is revealing an unlimited scope of prayer possibility. But this limitless potential goes untapped in the body of Christ. Our lives do not reveal that we are holding an open cheque — an invitation from God that gives us limitless possibilities.

The First Requirement: Corporate

The first thing is that an individual cannot pray this kind of prayer. It must be corporate. It transcends beyond what an individual alone can sustain.

The spiritual legionnaire revealed in Ephesians 6:10-12 is described in plural: "Finally, my brethren... we wrestle not..." The true context of territorial warfare is corporate. The reason is that the agencies of the kingdom of darkness operate in a corporate quorum — and the church must come up with a corporate front to combat it.

A woman once wrote in, describing her family's history in witchcraft. She had come to Christ, repented, and begun to intercede for her family. Her father was saved, her mother, her siblings — yet one by one they were dying mysteriously. The answer: the forces opposing her family had a corporate front, and she was trying to fight them on an individual front alone. We wrestle — but it is a we.

The Second Requirement: Agreement

The second requirement is the most difficult to achieve. We have exceeded the basic quorum of two or three. But agreement at the level Jesus speaks of is not a product of negotiation, nor of compromise.

As long as people carry their personalities, their self — it will be impossible to achieve genuine agreement. The agreement spoken of here is first an agreement with the Lord, and then through that alignment, an agreement with one another.

The Symphony — What Agreement Actually Means

The Greek word translated "agree" in this scripture is symphoniao — from which we get the word symphony.

Consider an orchestra. The bass guitar has its baseline. The keyboard strikes different chords. The lead guitar plays a different rhythm. The trumpet and the saxophone each have their own tone. Every instrument is playing something different — yet under the direction of a conductor, all the different tones merge into a single, unified sound: a symphony.

Now notice: the only way a symphony is achieved is when there is a conductor. And so the Lord is supposed to be the one conducting our prayer.

Every believer has a prayer tone. Two believers praying for the same territory will pray from different angles, about different things — yet it is all about the same territory. It will never be the same prayer. But if there is a conductor, even though the tones are different, they form a symphony.

It is when that symphony is formed that the Bible calls it agreement.

Agreement is not uniformity — each instrument has a specific tone. It is not repetition — each brings a sound consistent with the time signature. It carries the sense of diversity merging into one, creating a harmony.

What Happens Without a Conductor

Without someone conducting the orchestra, what you will have is noise. The Lord himself told me: in most quarters, what his people do as corporate prayer is noise — because people pray independent of the directives of the conductor. All the different tones are sounding in the wrong places.

When symphony is achieved in prayer, it feels as if the congregation is floating — as if there is a river. That is an indication that all of us are focused on the rhythm of the conductor in our own unique instruments.

The Gift of Tongues as Entry Point

Those baptised in the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in tongues have authority to speak in tongues whenever they choose. 1 Corinthians 14 confirms: Paul says, "I will pray in the spirit and I will pray in my understanding also."

When you begin to pray in tongues, you start from ground level and gain momentum. There comes a point at which you are quickened — the Holy Spirit acts upon your effort and raises it to another energy level. From that point, you begin to feel that energy in a change of utterance. That change of utterance resulting from being quickened is your true prayer tone. No two believers have the same tone.

The true corporate prayer symphony is possible if Jesus is the one conducting it. When each part is meant together — when each tone is brought under his direction — the possibilities are limitless.
