Understanding the Mercy of God
Our objective is understanding the mercy of God and understanding the way of mercy. We serve a God who is a merciful God. In Micah 7:18, that is the credential of God. Who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity and passeth by the transgression of the remnant of his heritage? He retaineth not his anger forever, because he delighteth in mercy. He is hungry to demonstrate mercy, hungry to gratify his benevolent heart. That is why a murderer like Saul of Tarsus could later become Paul the Apostle, why Moses could later become a deliverer, why Rahab the harlot could become a woman in the genealogy of Jesus Christ, and why Ruth the Moabitess, though the Moabites were an abominable tribe, could find her way into the lineage of Jesus. We serve the God who delights in mercy.
What has the mercy of God got to do for man?
Divine Visitations
The mercy of God is responsible for divine visitations. God visits people in his mercy. In John 5:1-2, there was a pool at Jerusalem called Bethesda, and Bethesda means mercy. It was the pool of mercy, and an angel was sent from heaven to grant visitation to everyone by that pool. It was mercy that God used when he said to Abraham, "According to the time of life, I will visit Sarah." He organizes visitation in his mercy because he knows somebody needs a visitation, a transformation, a turnaround, a change of story.
The Wonders of God

The mercy of God is the sponsor of the wonders of God. God is not showing wonders to brag or to prove he can do strange things. His wonders are the product of his mercy. Wonders go beyond healing, into any realm. While ministering in a crusade, rain fell everywhere in town except on the crusade ground, though the distance was small. That was not a healing miracle, that was a wonder. In another nation, in the middle of a desert, no rain had fallen for a long time, and it was declared that rain would fall only after the crusade ended, and forty-eight hours later it did, so heavily it began to carry cars. Whatever wonder you are trusting God for in a certain area of your life, the mercy of God shall supply that wonder.
The Healings of God
God heals by mercy, he delivers by mercy. Blind Bartimaeus cried, "Thou son of David, have mercy," in Mark 10:46-47, and when he heard it was Jesus of Nazareth he cried out for mercy. There are people who will cry to the Son of David tonight, "I need your mercy," and the Son of David will show mercy.
Access to Our Inheritance
In Psalm 136:21-22, he gave their land as a heritage, an heritage unto Israel his servant, for his mercy endureth forever. He gives us our inheritance by his mercy. If it was left to the devil and his wickedness, what God plans for you would never enter your hand, but the devil is a liar.
The Revelations of God and His Glory
We access the revelations of God, we access the glory of God, by his mercy. That is why not everybody accesses God's revelation or glory at the same level. Moses cried to God, "I beseech you, show me your glory," and God answered, "I will make all my goodness to pass before you, I will proclaim the name of God before you, because I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I will show mercy to whom I will show mercy." Under normal circumstances he would not show himself to anybody, but because Moses asked out of mercy, he did. Many people think depth with God comes by boasting of years in ministry or personal achievement, but it is those who rely heavily on his mercy that he reveals his glory to. God told Moses no human being can see him and live, so he would cover Moses' face with his hand and let him see only his back, which is why Moses could give the history of creation as if he had been there. One of the greatest things anyone can have is not healing, not deliverance, not financial supply, but a revelation of who God is. In Philippians 3:10, that I may know him and the power of his resurrection. To know him is to know power, to know revival, to know exploits, to find grace.
Divine Favor, Acceptance and Election
When God looks at two people and chooses one, that is mercy. In Romans 9:11-15, before the children were born, having done neither good nor evil, so that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works but of him that calleth, it was said, "The elder shall serve the younger." As it is written, "Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated." Is there unrighteousness with God? God forbid. For he said to Moses, "I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion." So it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that showeth mercy. It is not because of your fasting, your righteousness, the hours you can pray, or how much scripture you can quote. It is not because of works. What Jacob became was because of mercy, not merely because he had some character Esau lacked. Let us stop boasting in our ability, our talent, our effort, and begin to rely heavily on the mercy of God.
Divine Vengeance and Judgment
God slays by mercy. His mercy upon his people equals his anger upon their enemies. In Psalm 136:10-20, to him that smote Egypt in their firstborn, for his mercy endureth forever; that brought out Israel with a strong hand, for his mercy endureth forever; that divided the Red Sea, that overthrew Pharaoh and his host, that led his people through the wilderness, that smote great kings and slew famous kings, Sihon king of the Amorites and Og king of Bashan, for his mercy endureth forever.
There are agents of the devil, wicked men and wicked women who will not let you or your family rest, who shall be laid to rest by the mercy of God in this season.

The Way of Mercy
There are many ways of mercy, but here are four.
The Way of Helplessness
God shows mercy to the helpless. Even among ordinary human beings, when you see a helpless person struggling, you slow down to assist them. Mercy answers to helplessness. In Hebrews 4:16, let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Pride is the enemy of mercy, the enemy of grace, the enemy of the help of God. Come down. Don't behave as though you own the earth. Every time you go before God, don't prove what you can do, prove what you can't do. Say, "Lord, I am not here on the basis of any qualification, I am here for your mercy." The humbler you are, the more mercy you access. The more helpless you are in yourself and in your ability, the more mercy you access.
The Way of Prayerfulness
Prayerlessness is gracelessness. Prayerlessness disconnects you from the mercifulness of God. The holy of holies is where the mercy seat is, inside the presence of God. You have to cross beyond the veil, leave the outer court, into the holy of holies, the place where you are fellowshipping and communing with God. It is at the mercy seat that mercy can easily be found. Many are crying for mercy from the outer court, far from where God dwells. If you need mercy, go to the mercy seat, go to the presence of God. Revive your prayer life, take it to another dimension, and you can access mercy.
The Way of Righteousness
Sinfulness is the enemy of God's mercifulness. In Proverbs 28:13, he that covereth his sins shall not prosper, but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy. You may not be perfect, but by all means be sincere with God, be real with God. A lifestyle that sears your conscience disconnects you from mercy. If you need mercy, continuously ask for grace to live in uprightness.
The Way of Mercifulness
If you need mercy from God, you yourself must be merciful. In Psalm 18:25, with the merciful thou wilt show thyself merciful. You cannot be brutal to your wife and ask for mercy in business. Whatsoever a man sows, that shall he reap. You can reap mercy from God if you pay attention to everyone around you who is looking for your mercy. In Galatians 6:10, as we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith. Every good deed is not a burden, it is an opportunity. Before this week is over, look for somebody who needs mercy in some way, and be merciful to them. It will change your life, and you will see the compassion of God until people wonder what you did to be so favored.
- Father, thank you for your mercy that is responsible for this visitation I am experiencing right now.
- Thank you for your mercy that is responsible for your wonders and for healing.
- Thank you for your mercy that is responsible for my access to my inheritance.
- Thank you for your mercy that is responsible for revelations of your glory.
- Thank you for your mercy that is responsible for election of grace and for judgment of the adversary.
