Possessing unpossessed possessions. Joshua 18:1-3 records that the whole congregation of Israel assembled at Shiloh, the land was subdued, and yet seven tribes had still not received their inheritance. Joshua asked them, "How long are ye slack to go to possess the land which the Lord God of your fathers hath given you?" There are things already appointed for you in God that you have not yet gone to possess.

God Is Not Emotional

God is a spirit, and spirits do not operate on emotion. Many people believe that if they simply cry hard enough, without obeying principle, God will answer — but the strongest element in a walk with God is a principle to obey, not a feeling to display.

Ezekiel 24:15-18 records God telling Ezekiel he was about to take the desire of his eyes — his wife — with a stroke, and yet Ezekiel was instructed not to mourn, not to weep, and not to observe the customary rites of grief. That evening his wife died, and he obeyed exactly as instructed. There are things God allows a person to go through not to destroy them but to mold them, and certain elements only come out of a person through pain.

2 Chronicles 25:2 says a king did what was right in the sight of the Lord, "but not with a perfect heart." Many people do what is right — attend church, join a department, pray — but for the wrong motive, and it is only in a season of shaking that the true motive is revealed.

Unanswered Prayer Can Still Be for Your Good

In Mark 5, Jesus enters the region of the Gadarenes. The demons pleaded not to be cast out, and were granted their request. The people of the region asked Jesus to leave, and he did. But the healed man asked to follow Jesus, and was told no — instead to go home and testify. Mark 5:18-20 records that he went and became a preacher throughout the ten cities of Decapolis. Jesus said no to the one prayer that mattered most to him, because there was a bigger plan for him. Unanswered prayer, when God's hand is on a life, is still working for good.

The Sign Determines the Outcome

In basic mathematics, the sign before a number determines the result — the same numbers with a plus or a minus produce opposite outcomes. There are people who have subtraction following them, and others who have addition following them. Multiplication will follow you — it will follow your children, your spouse, and your work.

Reading the Names in Joshua 19

• Issachar — "There Is a Reward"

  A person can be saved and still lack evidence of it. Isaiah 42:22 describes a people robbed, spoiled, and snared, with none to say "restore." Evidence is the fruit of prophecy — it is what draws people to God's house. Some believers have been saved for twenty or more years with no visible proof to show for it.

• The Ground, Not Just the Gift

  Luke 12:16 speaks of the ground of a certain rich man bringing forth plentifully — not his skill, his ground. No matter how talented a person is, if their ground is not blessed, they can hold a degree and still owe rent. Acts 17:32 records people mocking Paul's teaching on the resurrection; his answer was, "We shall hear again of this matter" — a declaration that the mockery of the present moment would not be the final word on a person's house, marriage, or destiny.

• Asher — "Fortune, Happiness"

  There are people in church who love God but are quietly sad, wondering if this is really what was promised them.

  • A woman who had given up her inheritance to marry against her family's wishes, and was later abandoned with her young son, worked and sacrificed to put that son through school. He finally secured a good job and told her it was time for her to rest — and was killed in a car accident on his way home from an interview. She asked which prayer could possibly be prayed over such loss.

  Philippians 4:4 says to rejoice in the Lord always. God can restore joy even where sorrow has sat for decades.

• From Personal Need to God's Need

  Hannah initially wanted a child to prove a point to Peninnah, who provoked her. It was only when she stood in the temple, saw the corruption at the altar under Eli's sons, and reframed her request — "God needs a man, I will give him one" — that her prayer moved from her own need to God's need. Answers often come when what is asked for is tied to what heaven stands to gain, not only personal relief.

• Naphtali — "To Wrestle"

  Deuteronomy 33:23 describes Naphtali, though territory in a dry region, as satisfied with favor and blessing. For some people nothing has come easily — everything they have gotten in life, including their visa, their marriage, their breakthrough, has come through a fight.

• Dan — "Judgment, Vengeance"

  2 Samuel 20:15-22 tells of a rebel named Sheba who fled into the fortified city of Abel, so that Joab's army prepared to destroy the entire city over one man's offense. A wise woman intervened, the city gave up the one responsible, and the rest were spared. Sometimes an entire family's progress is held back because of one person's hidden resistance — one person must let go, or be dealt with, for others to move forward. John 11:50 says it is better for one man to die than for a nation to perish.

The Mother's Altar

Foundational discussions of family and destiny tend to focus only on the father's house, but the mother's house carries at least equal weight. Proverbs 1:8 says, "My son, forsake not the instruction of thy mother, nor the law of thy mother" — what a father says is instruction, but what a mother establishes functions as law. In Luke 8:19-21, when Jesus was told his mother and brethren wanted to see him, it was his mother named first as the one whose word carried weight over the rest of the family. Delilah, who brought down Samson, controlled him not through his strength but by keeping his head in her lap — four of the five senses reside in the head.

The season in the womb, and the process of coming out of water into life, mirrors Israel's exodus: they were, in effect, pregnant with the promise, and the Red Sea was the place where their water broke — a needed cleansing before entering what was promised.

Testimonies of Healing

• A former professional footballer who had stopped playing due to breathing difficulty found he could breathe freely after prayer.
• A woman who had lived with a suspected poisoning for two years reported the sensation in her chest was gone.
• A man unable to move his leg for ten years found movement restored.
• A woman with kidney stones that multiple hospitals could not resolve reported the condition gone after the prayer.
• Others reported relief from long-standing fibroids, chronic pain, and swelling, and a sixteen-year-old previously undergoing chemotherapy was reported to show no further symptoms.

Every healing received is declared permanent — what the Lord has removed is to stay removed, and what he has brought is to remain.
