Possessing Unpossessed Possessions

Joshua 18:1-3 — the whole congregation of the children of Israel assembled at Shiloh, and the land was subdued before them, yet there remained among them seven tribes which had not yet received their inheritance. Joshua said to them, "How long are you slack to go to possess the land which the Lord God of your fathers has given you?"

God brought Abraham's seed out of four hundred years of bondage in Egypt into a promised land. The Old Testament is a picture of the New — just as God brought Israel out of Egypt into the promised land, He brings us out of unrighteousness into righteousness. But one day Joshua looked at the twelve tribes and discovered only five had received a location in the promised land — seven were still squatting with the others, still living as though they were in Egypt, though the land had already been conquered.

This is a picture of many believers: saved, redeemed, carrying a Bible, yet still carrying sickness; carrying prophecy, yet still carrying struggle. Matthew 11:28-29 says both "I will give you rest" and "you shall find rest" — there is a rest that has already been given, but that rest must still be found and entered.

No power will stop you from entering the rest God has ordained for you. Whatever the enemy has stolen from your finances, your marriage, your health, or your children's lives, you will get it back.

You Are Not Your Condition

In Ruth 3, Boaz was not even the closest kinsman-redeemer qualified to marry Ruth — by his own words, there was one nearer than he. In Ruth 4, that nearer kinsman refused to marry her, because he saw Ruth as cursed — she had lost her father-in-law, her husband, her brother-in-law. He was judging her by her losses, not knowing that the woman he despised was carrying Obed, who would carry Jesse, who would carry David. God's choice is the devil's target — when you are the choice of God, you become the target of the enemy. Isaiah 40:28-31 — those who wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength, mount up with wings as eagles, run and not be weary, walk and not faint.

The Battle Over the Head

Genesis 48:14-15 — when Joseph brought his sons Ephraim and Manasseh to be blessed, Jacob crossed his hands deliberately over their heads. There are people, quiet and innocent, completely unaware of a battle taking place over their head, their plans, their year. In Genesis 40:16-17, the baker dreamed of birds eating bread out of a basket on his head — a battle for his head. In 2 Kings 4:19, a boy cried out "my head" before he died. Whatever battle has been aimed at your head, your children's heads, or your business, it is reversed and returns to its source.

The First Unpossessed Possession: Favour

Genesis 35:18 — Benjamin means "son of my right hand," and carries the sense of uncommon support, or favour. You can be born again, gifted, even speaking in tongues, and still lack favour. There are two components to favour — favour with God, which comes through spirituality, and favour with people, which comes through character. 1 Samuel 18:15-16 — despite already carrying a prophecy over his life, David still "behaved himself wisely." Character is the foundation of destiny. No armed robber begins with a gun — he begins by picking pockets. No drunkard begins with a bottle — he begins with a drop. Small compromises in character become the very things that later disqualify people from the favour their gifting alone could have carried them into.

There are four measures of favour in scripture:

  • Elementary favour — Psalm 106:4 — ordinary daily provision common to everyone.
  • Distinguishing favour — Psalm 30:7 — the favour that causes your application, out of twenty submitted, to be the one picked.
  • High favour — Luke 1:28 — "highly favoured," the kind others cannot explain but also cannot deny.
  • Overwhelming favour — Daniel 1:9 — the favour that keeps flowing even when nothing else is being added, so that, unlike the prodigal son who ran dry because "no man gave unto him" (Luke 15:16), you never run out.

Somebody will find you and favour you. They will find your children, your husband, your wife, and favour them. Favour in the morning, favour at noon, favour in the night — every day of the week.

The Second Unpossessed Possession: Being Heard

Genesis 29:33 — Simeon means "to be heard, to be announced." No matter your gift or talent, you need someone to recommend and announce you — you can be talented and still unheard because someone has worked to keep you from being announced. 1 Samuel 19:10 — Saul threw a javelin at David, but David slipped away; the Bible records at least twenty-one occasions David escaped Saul's attempts on his life.

The story of David and Goliath illustrates this: David was a shepherd who would normally carry a rod and staff, but he took a sling instead — because Saul's own tribe of Benjamin, per Judges 20:15-16, was famous for producing expert slingers who never missed their target. Saul himself, in blessing David to go and fight, unknowingly transferred that tribal skill onto him. What was meant to silence David's voice instead became the very weapon that made his voice heard across the nation.

No power can silence your voice. In your business, they will hear you. Your children, they will hear them. Your ministry, your craft, your talent — they will hear it.

The Third Unpossessed Possession: The Capacity to Keep What You Gain

Genesis 30:20 — Zebulun relates to being an habitable, stable dwelling place, one that can attract and keep. Some people gather much and see little of it remain, like a bag full of holes — Haggai 1:6. There are people who earn well but retain nothing.

Judges 1:5-7 tells of Adoni-Bezek, a king who had conquered seventy other kings and cut off their thumbs and great toes. Without thumbs, a person loses the ability to hold anything firmly — a picture of people who know the right connections but can never grip an opportunity long enough to benefit from it. Without toes, a person loses speed in pushing forward — a picture of destinies that take three times as long as they should, projects passed from one generation to the next unfinished.

God will complete that which concerns you. Whatever has been holding your rest and peace, whatever silences your name, whoever appears as a friend but is actually working against you — may they be exposed, in the name of Jesus.

Overwhelming Favour Without Asking

1 Samuel 10:2 — Samuel told Saul that as he departed, men would meet him and salute him before helping him. Favour changes how you are treated even before you ask for help. Cornelius fasted and prayed, and the angel of the Lord directed Peter to him without Cornelius ever having to track Peter down himself — that is favour that finds you rather than favour you have to chase.

Say it: I receive favour without asking. The power of God is here, and it is heavy here. My generation must hear my voice — nothing will silence it.

Inspiring Quote

Sermon

"One symptom of backsliding is that you begin to look down on the simple things that keep you on fire, calling a devotional 'just milk.' It's not about the information, it's about the consistency."
