Study the Life of David
If someone is going through constant betrayal and rejection, the first pastoral counsel is to study the life of David. Work through the Psalms. God will quicken certain psalms that will help navigate that season and show what kind of prayer is needed in that moment.
David's life was rejection upon rejection:
- Rejection in his father's house — he wasn't even called when Samuel came to anoint a king.
- Rejection by Saul — a good job followed by his employer trying to kill him.
- Rejection by the Philistines — when he offered to fight alongside them, they turned him away.
- Rejection by his own men — the 400 he had trained and poured into nearly turned on him.
- Rejection within his own family — his son Absalom's rebellion.
And yet David became the measuring stick by which every king in Israel was judged.
What the Apostles Understood About Death
The apostles saw what they would become after death, and it changed everything. Jesus mesmerised them with the resurrected body. They saw him eat. They saw him ascend into heaven in that body. They saw him walk through a wall. They touched him. The glory of the glorified body was on display before them.
Peter, writing about his own coming death, described it as "putting off this tent" — not loss, but transition. Paul said, "To be present in the body is to live for Christ. To be absent is to be present with him." They had seen too much to be afraid.
That place where all that matters is Jesus — that place is rest. You cannot glory in your affliction until you are there.
Suffering Is an Entrustment
The one with trials is given an invitation to come into the abounding, endless life. God is not punishing — he is weighing.
A sign of growth is God calling you into difficulty.
If rejection has never been part of your story, God won't do anything significant through you. The gospel itself is rejected by the majority of people who hear it. Jesus sent people to preach, knowing some would reject them. The nature of the mission contains rejection built in.
God can call a person for one soul. It takes more genuine work to pastor a small church than a large one — crowds encourage the messenger. But two people, week after week, demands a heart that is truly God's and not crowd-driven.
No Story, No Usefulness
You cannot preach the gospel from a place of privilege and have it land with power. A preacher who has never been through hardship speaks from a disconnected place. The reason Jesus had to become a human being is stated plainly: "We do not have a high priest who cannot be touched with the feelings of our infirmity."
If you cannot be touched with the feelings of the infirmity, you cannot intercede for them.
No story means no usefulness. The scars are not the identity — they are the credential.
Don't Settle for Someone Else's Label
Rahab is still called a prostitute in Hebrews 11, even after her redemption — not because that defines her, but because that is the story from which she was saved. Blind Bartimaeus — "blind" became his name. But his name was Timaeus, meaning honoured.
Until people see who you actually are by revelation, do not settle for the label they hand you. As Jesus asked Peter: "Who do you say that I am?" — not what others have decided.
Father, strengthen this one in this season. Surround them with voices of love and wisdom. Let their identity be rooted in what you have called them — not in what they have been through. In Jesus' name. Amen.
