Why Watch Night? A Justification

James 4:13-14 — come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make profit." He says: whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.

Most Pentecostal and charismatic churches deliberately avoid this text because they don't know what to do with it. It unsettles their theology in ways they cannot easily recover from. But it is right there in the Bible. An apostle is saying it.

The conclusion that text forces is this: there is no strategic way to know with certainty that the coming year will be a good year. It is beyond mental ascent. It is beyond the realm of strategy and planning. You are literally at the mercy of the Father's will.

And so when we gather for watch night service, this is what it represents: a corporate admission of helplessness. Except the Lord builds a house, they labor in vain that build it. Except the Lord watches over a city, the watchman stays awake for nothing.

Jeremiah 10:23 — O Lord, I know that the way of man is not in himself. It is not in man who walks to direct his own steps. If you have lived long enough, you connect the dots and see that life does not always add up exactly. The most careful person in the room is not exempt. The most prayerful person in the room is not automatically exempt. Trusting in the Lord is itself a strategy. That is why the people gathered — to remember.

Psalm 20:7 — some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we will remember the name of the Lord our God. The Hebrew word translated "remember" is *zakar* — it means to bring something from the past into the present. To make a reference point from prior faithfulness influence your current conviction.

This is not passive nostalgia. It is remembrance as a battle strategy. Some are going into the new year trusting their armory — their intelligence, their connections, their resources. The people of God are going in remembering what they have already seen.

The Faithfulness of God in the Past Is Confidence for the Future

Matthew 16:5-12 — when Jesus warned his disciples about the leaven of the Pharisees, they whispered among themselves and concluded he was talking about the bread they had forgotten to bring. Jesus rebuked them immediately: O ye of little faith! Have you forgotten the five loaves and the two fish? Have you forgotten the seven loaves?

Here is the thing: when God performed those miracles, he did not tell them that because he had done it, they would never lack bread again. He expected them to arrive at that conclusion themselves. When they came to the same challenge and responded the same way they had before — with anxiety — he was angry.

The moment Jesus has solved a problem for you, he does not have to assure you about that thing again in your life. If he has to, it is unbelief.

Here you are anxious about your finances. Has there been a time in your life when your back was against the wall and you did not know how the school fees would come, and then somehow it came? Has God ever intervened in your health, or preserved your life on a road, or turned a situation that had no natural solution? That faithfulness is not a one-time event. It is a track record. The faithfulness of God in the past is conviction for the future.

This is what David understood. He did not ask God whether to fight Goliath. God never told David to go. David went because of what he remembered. The Lord who delivered the lion and the bear — who is this uncircumcised Philistine? The remembrance became the confidence.

Psalm 103:2 — bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits.

Four Ways God Taught His People to Remember

God knows that if power is preserved in memory, it is replicable across generations. He instituted specific mechanisms to ensure that the testimony survived. Understanding these is important because they apply to the life of every believer.

1. The Passover — and the Principle of Crossover

   Exodus 12:26-27 — when your children ask, "What do you mean by this service?" you shall say, "It is the Passover sacrifice of the Lord, who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt."

   God did not need to part the ocean every year. He did it once — and then he gave the people a devotional infrastructure to recall it. As long as they had that, no generation would be without his power. This is the theological origin of watch night services and crossover celebrations. The point is not the event itself. The point is the memory, the deliberate institutional recall of what God has done.

2. The Manna in the Jar

   Exodus 16:33-34 — Moses said to Aaron: take a pot and put an omer of manna in it, and lay it before the Lord to be kept for your generations.

   Every other manna would spoil in 24 hours. This one would stay — as a witness. So that when the generation that never saw manna is asking "Can God provide?", someone can show them. The tangible evidence of what God did for their fathers is preserved so that faith can be transferred.

   God knows that if he can preserve the physical evidence of power, that power is replicable. The same principle is why Moses knew how to sustain the work of God from generation to generation. Every time a revival died, it was not because God was tired — it was because the people failed to preserve the evidence of his move.

3. Songs

   Deuteronomy 31:19 — write down this song for yourself and teach it to the children of Israel; put it in their mouths, that this song may be a witness for me against them.

   Stop reducing songwriting to something only musically gifted people do. It is a spiritual mechanism for memory. Write songs about your own experiences with God. Put specific events in the song. Songs that convey an encounter that only you and God remember. The reason God wanted it in song form is so that when trouble comes, there is no excuse — the testimony is already on the lips. When you sing "He is a miracle-working God" and then act like a pagan in a crisis, God says: it's right there in your song. That song is a witness against you.

4. Altars — Memorials

   Joshua 24:27 — this stone shall be a witness among us, for it has heard all the words of the Lord.

   Every time a patriarch of faith encountered God, he raised up an altar — a memorial. Not superstition. Not performance. A physical marker saying: something happened here. When anyone passed by, even without an explanation, the sight of those stones communicated that someone encountered God in this place, and it must be commemorated.

   The only difference between a human being and a stone is the breath of God. When Jesus said that if these were silent, the stones would cry out, it was because the stones recognized what the people were failing to recognize. The privilege of having been there — the privilege of being alive to remember what God has done.

1 Samuel 7:12 — then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen, and called its name Ebenezer, saying, "Thus far the Lord has helped us."

Eben means stone. Ezer means help. Ebenezer: the stone of help — a memorial raised to say: an encounter happened here, and because of it, the future is secured.

The Four Principles of Ebenezer

1. Thanksgiving

   Thus far. Whatever the year has been — difficult, uncertain, incomplete — acknowledge the hand of God in it. There are things you take for granted: sicknesses you recovered from that others died from. Roads you drove down safely while someone ahead of you did not. Problems that resolved themselves in ways that had no natural explanation.

   Sometimes you are so focused on what you are still waiting for that you have forgotten where you are now was once your prayer point. Acknowledge what has already been done before asking for what is next.

   Even if God did not part the ocean again this year — if he did it once, it is still worth celebrating. The Passover was celebrated annually not because God parted the Red Sea every year, but because it happened once. Once is enough to warrant a lifetime of remembrance.

2. Repentance and Self-Introspection

   When the children of Israel first went into battle against the Philistines in 1 Samuel 4, they were not walking with God. Their lives were not aligned with him. When they began losing, someone said: bring the ark. They turned the ark into a talisman — using God for what he could give rather than responding to who he is. The Philistines, who actually feared the ark more than Israel did, still won. And the ark was seized.

   The reason: you cannot use God. You cannot wield his presence like a tool while living in rebellion.

   James 4:7 — submit yourself to God. Then resist the devil and he will flee from you. The submission comes first. That is the requirement. Only people who have truly bowed their knee to God in genuine submission enjoy his full backing.

   On a night or a day of Ebenezer, there must be self-introspection. There may be a practical instruction from God that has been left unattended — how you handle your health, how you love your spouse, how you raise your children, the priorities in your career. This is the season for reassessment. Put things in order.

3. A Boundary Marker — New Beginning

   When Samuel placed that stone, it became a boundary marker. A clear line between the failures of the past and the prophetic destiny going forward. This is the wisdom behind watch night services: that no matter how terrible the past season has been, there can be a new beginning.

   Raise up a new altar and say: from here, things change. In the past, my prayer life was inconsistent — not anymore. In the past, I made certain compromises — not anymore. This is the moment to set those markers. The kind of friendships to keep. The kind of places not to go. The practical commitments to make. These are boundary markers.

4. Prophecy

   Why gather on a night like this? Because by the advantage of the Spirit, tomorrow does not have to be a surprise. The one we serve declares the end from the beginning. When you side with such a person, your life will not be defined by accidents.

   The strategy of Ebenezer is that the faithfulness of God in the past is the prophecy of the future. I have seen what he did before. I know tomorrow is sorted.

   Luke 1:54 — he has helped his servant in remembrance of his mercy. Not because of works, but in remembrance of mercy. That is the summary. He has helped. He will help again.
