Who is the lost?

Luke 19:10

The Greek word for lost there is apollumi. It carries two ideas

1. To be ruined or perishing

   2 Corinthians 4:3

   The word perishing there is that same word, apollumi. It means lost, ruined, heading towards destruction

2. To be missing, out of place, no longer where you belong

   You can be in church and be lost

The lost are not simply bad people. They are people who belong to God, because God made them

Redeemer means one who buys back lost relatives. Ruth and Boaz is a picture of redemption

For Boaz to redeem, there had to be a connection with Ruth's husband. He was his kinsman

When the Bible says Jesus has come to redeem us, it means God never saw us as Gentiles, not his children. We were always his children, but lost children

Jesus coming for us is Jesus coming to buy us back and bring us back home

So there are people who belong to God but are separated from him, unable to find their way back and under the sentence of sin

Sin is not just an act. Sin is also a master. He has come to deliver us from the power of sin

You are defeated by sin when sin is not sin to you, when you are not resisting sin. You have succumbed to its power

But if you know it is wrong and you are fighting back, I do not want to do this anymore, you are not under the power of sin, even if you sin

In that instance sin is fighting you, because another law is working in your members Romans 7:23

Unbelievers do what they like. For some of them it is not even temptation. Sinners sin

For you it is a temptation, and you feel bad when you do bad things, because bad things are not your nature

Because they belong to him, God goes looking for them. That is why you have Jesus

Praying for the lost

When we pray for the lost, we do not ask God to touch their hearts. God already touched their hearts by giving them Jesus

Jesus is God reaching out to mankind. He cannot do more than that. The best God has is Jesus Romans 8:32

If you say, God, bring the lost, you are saying God has power to bring them but he is refusing to

The Bible tells us there is somebody blinding their eyes to not see the glory of the gospel

The condition of the lost

1. They are spiritually dead

   Ephesians 2:1 to Ephesians 2:2

   An unbeliever is dead in trespasses and sins

   A dead man does not need a job. A dead man does not need marriage. A dead man does not need a breakthrough

   A dead man does not need a better life. A dead man needs life

   Somebody is working in them, making them disobey. That is why salvation is called deliverance from the power of darkness into the kingdom of his dear Son Colossians 1:13

   Because it is deliverance, it means there is warfare. A lot of Christians do not understand this

   Apologetics is making a defense for the faith. It is not authenticating faith. You have to have faith to make a defense of it

2. They are under condemnation

   John 3:18

   When you go to a doctor, you do not want them to lie to you. When you have cancer, you do not want them to say you have malaria

   Condemned means they are walking in hell. They are already judged, and the judgment right now is condemnation

   If you understand this, it changes your worldview

   No normal believer goes through a day without a burden for souls

   You see people coming down from a jeep and you are distracted, feeling bad that you are poor. But if it ends now, this person is in eternal damnation

   I question whether you understand or even believe the gospel if you have loved ones that are not saved and you do not care

   It would be very selfish to be in heaven worshiping God, look down and see my wife burning in hell, and not care

   Some go to church and the husband does not go. The wife does not go. The children do not go. You have colleagues you claim you love and you have never witnessed to them

   Some of us are ashamed of the gospel. I do not want them to start calling me pastor in the office. They can call you banker, they are under condemnation

3. They are blind

   2 Corinthians 4:4

   The god of this age has blinded the minds of those who do not believe. That is why they do not believe

   This is warfare prayer. We are not asking, Lord, touch their hearts. There is somebody doing something evil, and we address him and tell him to take his hands off them

   Sometimes you are preaching the gospel, they are listening, and all of a sudden they switch. It is like a demon whispered something to them

   You can practice every other religion in peace apart from Christianity. Why? Just this one thing you are not allowed to do

   When your phone has a problem, you take it to Apple, because Apple made your phone. The Christian God repairs bodies

   That is a strong case that the Christian God is the God of all flesh

   This is the only place where miracle is like water. People come back to life at the name of Jesus

   If he is not alive, why are we calling him and he is answering?

3 ways people get lost

Luke 15

Jesus told three stories in that chapter, and each shows a different way of being lost. The Holy Spirit opened my eyes to this

1. The lost sheep, lost by wandering

   Sheep do not rebel, they drift

   In your search for Jesus, moving up and down, you can be going to and fro, and before you know it you are inside another rubbish thing

   Curiosity is not hunger. What God satisfies is hunger, not curiosity

   You are in a Bible believing church. They are teaching you God's word. What are you looking for?

   Illustration: the angel who cooks

   Someone was telling us about a book on an experience he had in heaven

   He said there is an angel that cooks, the angel that was cooking the manna the children of Israel were eating. He gave different names of angels

   That person has wandered away. He left the confines of scripture

   This is the evil of wandering. If you are fed wandering, you will not want to come back to the flock

   It is like a stray dog. Once you realize you do not need an owner to eat, you never want to be under a leash

2. The lost coin, lost inside the house

   You are in church but you are not in Christ

   You are in the house of God but your mind is no more there. Your passion is dead. You are now going through the motions

   It happens most to pastors

   The only thing that can bring you out is the mercy of God and God's word. The owner uses a lamp to search. The lamp is light, and the light is the word

   The coin cannot find its way. God has to intervene with mercy and introduce the light of his word

   You can be practicing Christianity and love God and not have the fear of God

   Illustration: the man in prison

   John Bevere went to meet a man of God in prison. He had a huge scandal in America, for abuse and money laundering

   John asked him, when did you stop loving Jesus? You had the largest church in America. You abused people. You stole money. And you say you never stopped loving Jesus?

   The man said, I never stopped loving Jesus. I stopped fearing God

   You can love him and not fear him. You can fornicate and say grace covers it all. No fear of God. You are lost in the house

3. The lost son, lost by rebellion

Lost means wanted but missing

Lost does not mean you are worthless

You have to be declared lost. That means they were looking for you before they said this person is lost

We are going to be praying for all our family members who are lost

People who used to be on fire for God and are no longer on fire

Ministers we know who have changed, where corruption has entered
